Will Ferrell plays the role of buddy the elf, i think he does a outstanding job and really gets into the character of the person that he is playing. This film is amazing and he is one of the main reasons for that. It was very funny and also a great film regardless of what time of the year you watch it. Even though it is off course aimed at Christmas time, this will have you laughing any time you choose to watch it.
There are so many laugh out loud moments in this film and i love that about it. Some films only really have one or two parts that make you think, oh that was funny but this has you laughing from start to finish. Buddy is very endearing and loveable and is alot taller than all of the other elves which is quite funny.
On the dvd you see elves of the normal height you expect elves to be and they are gazing up almost in awe, shock or horror at buddy. I cant quite figure out which of those expressions it is, although i am guessing it is expression's of horror and amusement all at once. It seems that they are looking at him and wondering what planet this dude who is towering over them come from.
He is extremely tall next to them and looks so out of place in his green suit, bright yellow stockings and funny elf hat. He looks like he should have outgrown them along time ago. He seems to be very lost most of the time and this expression is the one you see very often on his face.
He is also very sensitive which makes him very funny to watch in certain parts especially when he finds out his dads on the naughty list. When he gets excited about something he gets over excited and hyper and when he gets upset he gets extremely upset. I don't remember him being inbetween these two extremes for the most part he was one or the other.
Will brings the character of buddy to life and is very convincing as him aswell. This film has that magical element in it, the one that you
associated with Christmas when you where alot younger. When everything seemed so much better and before life threw the disappointing reality at you that elves, Santa and Rudolph are nothing but figments of some undoubtedly rich persons imagination and that they are really just marketing tools used to promote products and suck more money out of people. It takes you back to the time when you still believed in it all and you really get caught up in it.
I loved it so much i even got my own copy to watch when i want too and it takes alot for me to spend money on dvds. They have to really have made me like them because now you can watch films on sky movies and YouTube plus other sites as well. They are widely available and it is a tough decision parting with money for them, especially when you know that you can see them for free.
If i am being honest i often don't and struggle to see the point of paying for a dvd because of this. This film was worth every penny though because it is a feel good film. It really does put you in the christmas spirit the only other films i would say are of a similar greatness to this in terms of Christmas films and there brilliance are The Grinch and Miracle on 34th street. These films in my opinion are what makes Christmas good, oh and the Home Alone films too almost forgot them. They are classics and when i think of Christmas i think of them and Elf is now also on that list in my opinion it is definitely a Christmas classic.
If you have not seen this i really do recommend that you do, the actors and actresses in this film are excellent and the clothes used on Buddy the elf, the elves and Santa are very colorful and the elves except for Buddy actually do look like elves. Well buddy does look like a elf just a abnormally large one LOL. James Caan who plays the role of buddys father fits the role perfectly.
He really puts in a great performance too a extent where i couldn't see anyone else doing his role better than he did it. He is not convinced that Buddy is his son at first and despite Buddy's various attempts to enlighten him he remains unconvinced. It is funny yet moving to watch because he seems to see him as being ridiculous and doesn't want any relation to him and in the end he really has no choice. He is extremely insensitive to Buddy, insensitivity and Buddy do not go well together. It is moving because his softer side shows as the film unfolds and you see more of why he seems rather cold and seems to be distancing himself from Buddy.
Buddy lightens him up abit as the story goes along, which is good because he is a rather moody character. Buddy is on a quest to bring Christmas spirit back to a world that is seemingly without it and on his way to doing this there are some memorable funny scenes you will find hard to forget. He is rather naive and clumsy and gets himself into some extremely funny situations because of this.
The film begins with narration by papa elf and he explains all about buddy and the jobs available too elves.when Buddy meets Jovie the beautiful department store elf played extremely well by Zooey Deschanel they both become quite close. Buddy doesnt seem able to distinguish the difference between the North Pole and New york and this is also humorous for many reasons that will become apparent when you watch this excellent film.
SOUNDTRACK
I really liked the soundtrack and some of the songs where sung by the character themselves in the film. It definitely adds to the Christmas feel of the film and makes it even more enjoyable. Some of the songs on the soundtrack are good old Christmas songs that most us know well and love, i will list a few below:
Pennies From Heaven - Louis Prima Sleigh Ride - Ella Fitzgerald Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let it snow - Lena Horne Baby It's Cold Outside - Leon Redbone/Zooey Deschanel Santa Baby - Eartha Kitt Winter Wonderland - Leon Redbone Santa Claus Is Coming to Town - Eddy Arnold
This film is rated a PG
Price - The price on this varies depending on where you go i have seen it for a very reasonable £4.99 on eBay and £9.99 in other shops online and offline i think the most it will ever cost you is about £13.99 as it has been out for a while now.
MY OPINION
This film is my favorite Christmas film it has all of the elements that make a Christmas film great rolled into one. My previous favorite was The Grinch which i still rate high but this has taken place above it. The soundtrack is excellent and is full of song's that i love and i think that most other people will love it too.
You will more than likely already know most of the great songs on it. The film is a very good, light hearted comedy and is even moving at times mainly at parts with buddy and his father. The characters of Santa, the elves and the North Pole are all excellently thought of and the outfits are fun, the whole film is delightful.
At first i thought this would be a kids film and that i wouldn't like it but it actually is alot of fun for adults too. It doesn't matter what age you are this is a great film for people of all ages. It really made me laugh alot it was so funny and remained funny throughout the whole film.
Will ferrell is excellent as Buddy, i have yet to see one film that he has been in that hasn't been hilarious. I doubt i will because he is very good at comedy acting. Everything about this film is good and it is the sort of film you can watch several times and not get bored of it. The 95 minutes that this film lasts are enjoyable and entertaining even if you where in a very bad mood i think that this film would cheer you up
Its the sort of film that only one which is on its level of brilliance comes out every now and again, it is not just any old film that you will watch and forget. it is memorable and it is especially good when you do watch it at christmas.
My favourite scene is hard to pick because this is full of hilarious moments but i think its when he mistakes someone who is not a elf for a elf that had me laughing ages after seeing it, everytime i thought of it. I will find this film hard to forget not that i would want to anyway because one funny phrase which is, cotten headed ninny muggins has become a regular phrase my mum comes off with since seeing it LOL
