Will Ferrell makes yet another memorable splash on the big screen in Jon Favreau's sweet and hilarious Christmas fable. Ferrell is Buddy, an innocent figure who was raised as an...
more...elf in the North Pole by his adoptive father, Papa Elf (Bob Newhart). When Buddy discovers that he's actually a human being, he heads to New York City to reunite with his biological father. The trouble is that his dad, Walter (James Caan), is a publishing executive who doesn't have time for anything other than work. Buddy moves in with Walter and his family, and proceeds to teach them a lesson or two about what being a family really means. Meanwhile, he also falls head over heels in love with the incredibly cute department store clerk, Jovie (Zooey Deschanel). By the time Christmas Eve rolls around, the general lack of spirit in the air threatens to ground Santa for the big night. He must rely on Buddy's expertise and overall enthusiasm to ensure that Christmas will be saved once again. Favreau's film is family entertainment at its finest, featuring a performance by Ferrell that is at once innocent, tender, and laugh-out-loud funny. A stellar supporting cast--including Caan, Deschanel, Newhart, and Faizon Love--adds to the film's already overabundant charm.

The Elf is a great film which was in the cinemas this time last year and has just been released on DVD/Video in time for Christmas.

Starring Will Ferrell as Buddy, the film is about a baby (Buddy) who escapes from his cot in an orphanage and crawls into Santa's sack whilst Santa is stocking up on mince pies and delivering toys.

Santa doesn't realise that he has Buddy on board until he gets home to Lapland where Buddy appears before Santa and all the other elves.

The decision is made to keep Buddy and be brought up by Papa Elf (Bob Newhart) who treats him as a son which is no easy task as he's obviously a lot taller being human! As Buddy is so much bigger than your average elf, he has problems as a toymaker and eventually discovers the truth when overhearing a conversation between some of the other elves. Papa Elf spills the beans and Buddy decides to head to New York to find his true father (played by James Caan) who is on Santa's 'naughty list'.

Buddy has no easy time trying to get along and be accepted by his father but has an amazing time with his step brother who helps him get a girlfriend. Buddy in New York is hilarious as he has never had contact with other humans before and is discovering things like escalators and revolving doors for the first time.

The film ends with Santa's sleigh breaking down because no one beleives in the magic of Christmas or Santa anymore and so it takes a good old Christmas sing song to get the thing working again which is helped along with everyone seeing Santa - and who says he isn't real!

It's a great film which the kids love and has quite a few funnies for the adults too!
