Will Ferrell makes yet another memorable splash on the big screen in Jon Favreau's sweet and hilarious Christmas fable. Ferrell is Buddy, an innocent figure who was raised as an...
more...elf in the North Pole by his adoptive father, Papa Elf (Bob Newhart). When Buddy discovers that he's actually a human being, he heads to New York City to reunite with his biological father. The trouble is that his dad, Walter (James Caan), is a publishing executive who doesn't have time for anything other than work. Buddy moves in with Walter and his family, and proceeds to teach them a lesson or two about what being a family really means. Meanwhile, he also falls head over heels in love with the incredibly cute department store clerk, Jovie (Zooey Deschanel). By the time Christmas Eve rolls around, the general lack of spirit in the air threatens to ground Santa for the big night. He must rely on Buddy's expertise and overall enthusiasm to ensure that Christmas will be saved once again. Favreau's film is family entertainment at its finest, featuring a performance by Ferrell that is at once innocent, tender, and laugh-out-loud funny. A stellar supporting cast--including Caan, Deschanel, Newhart, and Faizon Love--adds to the film's already overabundant charm.

Full review
I am now re-doing my review on elf as I cannot delete it and I got awful ratings, so here we go.

This film was generally very good apart from the odd things like the regeneration of the North Pole that is generally pretty awful. The actors play well in the film giving the film a lot more character, (which it needs), and then adding the elf into New York was very effective and funny.

Story = 7/10
=========

This film has a good solid story line, about a human that got into the North Pole as an elf but soon found out that he was a human when he got far to big to be an elf, he then goes in search of his real father, (who does not know his son as he was put up for adoption as a baby). The storyline stays strong throughout the film giving the film a good base line which it oh so needed. Overall the story of the film was very good.

Characters & Performances = 9/10
=========================

Most of the characters in this film are very well made, with their personalities and activities etc. All of the actors cast for the different characters were all picked very well and are definitely the main people for the job. Their performances were also very good and made the film very good as all the actors were very good and made the film very atmospheric and effective. Overall the characters and performances were very good.

Special Effects = 4/10
================

The special effects of this film were pretty awful throughout. When they started to re-generate the North Pole, they did awfully with nearly two-dimensional trees and awfully animated snowmen that probably would end up scaring little children. Sometimes in the film though, (such as when they animate Santa’s sleigh), it is extremely realistic giving the film a much need edge on the FX side of things. Overall the FX was satisfactory as they could be brilliant but for the most part they were pretty awful.

Soundtrack = 8/10
=============

If I remember correctly there wasn’t actually that much music in the film but when there was it was well made and of very good clarity which did add a good effect on the film. The more obvious sounds such as bells, were very well done and worth some commending. Overall the soundtrack was very good but there wasn’t actually that much of a sound track.

Comparisons = 9/10
===============

Compared to other Christmassy films, such as the Santa Clause this film was better as it was much more funny and it was definitely directed better than others. Also they used much better computer technology and cameras that definitely improved the viewing experience. Overall the comparisons with other films make elf the better choice.

Overall this film was very good and good for children to watch around Christmas time. Definitely worth a look in.
