In this sequel to DAREDEVIL, the Marvel series is drawn upon once again to present the mysterious and powerful character of Elektra (Jennifer Garner), a professional assassin with...
more...special skills. Clad in a red suit, she relies on her mental acuity, which allows her to see a short distance into the future. With this talent she can stalk her victims and kill them before they are even aware of her presence. She is cold and introspective to a fault, shunning all human contact in favour of meditating on her powers. Even so, she is haunted by the memories of her youth, when as a small girl she witnessed her mother's brutal murder by a mysterious horned enemy. When a mission leads her to a father and daughter, Mark (Goran Visnjic) and Abby (Kirsten Prout), something deep inside her causes her to abort the assassination. But before she knows it, a team of the highly dangerous ninja experts called the Hand are sent to take out Mark and Abby themselves. The leader of the Hand, Kirigi (Will Yun Lee), has a greater objective in mind for Mark and Abby, and Elektra decides to defend the helpless twosome until she solves the mystery behind why the Hand wants them dead. Highlights of the film centre on Elektra's impressive moves in her red-hot suit, flinging her Sai weapons with menacing accuracy. Plentiful action scenes and special effects certainly add some high-intrigue moments to the plot, but there is also a softer side to ELEKTRA, which is about mothers and daughters. Elektra frequently flashes back to her mother's death and her memories of youth, while in present time she is forming a bond with young Abby, providing for some tender moments.

Nobody really wants a sequel to a mediocre film. By the same token nobody wants a spin off from a mediocre film. But this is what we have with Elektra; apparently some people liked the character in the Daredevil movie despite being nothing special.

So now Jennifer Garner brings her Alias combat skills to the big screen by returning to the role of Elektra. Having been resurrected Elektra is trained by a blind tutor called Stick to be more badass than before. When Elektra takes on an assassination job she finds herself targeting a young girl and her father. They are wanted by a mysterious group known as 'The Hand' because the girl has some powers or something. This all leads to a bit of kung fu action where people have clearly been watching too many Asian films.

The thing with Elektra is that it's incredibly weak on the story front. It plods along with not a lot happening for the majority of the movie. Then it trys to cram in a load of action in the last twenty minutes and get away with it. But it's all very dull and un-interesting throughout. There is no discernable villain as the hand are a bunch of pretty lame looking lot with little menace and just a cool line in CGI.

I am honestly trying hard to remember what I saw in the movie, it was that bad that I've pretty much forgotten everything. Jennifer Garner tries her best but all the while I just felt I was watching an extended episode of Alias.

Elektra is a boring waste of time that really shouldn't have made it to the big screen. The Daredevil movie was a pretty average affair so why they decided to make this movie is a mystery. Needless to say it was a resounding flop on its release.

I would try and offer you more but there's not a lot to write about and even thinking about it coma inducing.

If you decide to try this movie out on DVD then you will get an excellent transfer. The 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen picture is crisp, sharp and looks pretty spiffy. The Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS soundtracks are high in quality with some punch. The DTS just edges it with a bit more dynamic.

Yes there's more should you have enjoyed the main presentation.

The deleted scenes section features a lot of throwaway stuff. But there is one scene that features an appearance from Ben Affleck, it's nothing special and wouldn't have improved anything.

The 'making of' runs for about 12-minutes and your usual puff piece. Everyone is under the illusion that it's a great movie in the making and the story is solid. Of course it's not.

'Incarnations' is a pretty decent documentary of the character of Elektra and her various guises throughout the years. Various comic book luminaries offer comment and give a far better account of Elektra than the movie.

Finally there's a trailer for the extended cut of Daredevil. The original cut was a tepid affair so even more of it fills me with dread.

-In Conclusion-

Man I've seen some pretty ropey movies recently and this is just another one of them. I wouldn't even recommend a rental. If you're really curious then I suggest trying to get a copy through one of the online rental trials. Then you're only giving up ninety minutes of your time but nothing out of your pocket.
