Advantages: Good Story, True Character and Great Cinematography Disadvantages: Low Budget and Black & White
This old 1958 film directed by William Fairchild, starring Laurence Harvey, Michael Craig, Sid James, Laurence Brooks and Michael Brill and tells the heroic story of wartime defence against Italian mines in 1941 in the Mediterranean.
The Story......
Lieutenant Lionel Crabb (Laurence Harvey) is drafted in as the Navy's Explosive expert to protect Gibraltar, and help protect the ships moored in the Harbour against ship mines, by training divers and try and master diving himself.
He finds only two British divers available to help the Lieutenant and has to start a fresh. Although keen they are without experience and Crabb wants things to like clockwork quickly to prevent any more ships being sabotaged.
Crabb then faces bureaucracy as well, when he discovers that the Italians are the ones openly sabotaging the ships in the straits ...
Advantages: Looks Nice Disadvantages: But it's incredibly boring and has no substance and scares
. The cinematography is excellent and the production design is of a high standard. This is to be expected when you consider Director Christophe Gans previous film Brotherhood of the Wolf. However any film can strive and achieve an excellent look but it doesn't mean a thing if the script isn't up to scratch. The biggest problem with Silent Hill is that it's slow, meandering and incredibly boring. A large part of the film sees Radha Mitchell wandering around shouting Sharon like she's Ozzy Osbourne. This is not in the slightest bit interesting and gets incredibly annoying after what seems like an hour. Unsurprisingly the film actually feels like a video game with Mitchell encountering darker and darker levels and bigger and badder challenges as the film progressed. To break it up, there's a sub-plot involving Sean Bean as the husband on the trail of his wife ...
Advantages: the special effects are impressive Disadvantages: disjointed story, not scary, irritating, bad accents, overly long
Silent Hill (otherwise known as 127 minutes of your life you will never get back) is a "scary movie" staring Radha Mitchell and Sean Bean.
Ugh where do I start? Well the positive is that on the back of the DVD the summary makes it sound intriguing and interesting with the potential to be a real jump out of your seats thriller.
The other positive is that the high polish production and special effects really are excellent and despite my opinion of the movie you cant deny it that accolade.
Okay end of positives. The plot is a little girl called Sharon has a tendency to sleep walk and whilst doing so she screams about "Silent Hill" and draws dark pictures that horrify her adoptive parents (Mitchell and Bean). Sharon remembers none of this whilst she is awake but her mother decides she needs to get to the bottom of it and researches Silent ...
