As you probably guessed from the film this was hubby’s film choice, think he is going through his John Wayne season now just to annoy me!
The film stars John Wayne who plays the role of Cole Thornton who is a hired gun hand. He returns to El Dorado after a few years absence where he meets up with his old friends, one being Sheriff J P Hara. Cole warns Hara that he is there on business as the big business man wants to hire his to take some land from the neighbouring land owners so he can control the majority of El Dorado. After Cole and Hara send some time catching up Cole decides that he will not take the job and sets off to tell the business man he will not accept his work.
Cole leaves town to take up more work but he soon overhears a discussion in a bar where a man has come back for revenge after his best friend got shot and soon Cole is helping him and we find out the man is called Mississippi and they become friends. Cole did find out some information from the leader of the gang who have just
lost a member that they are heading for El Dorado to help take land for a business man as they have the perfect chance now as the sheriff has become an alcoholic after he fell in love with a woman who did not stay around for him. Cole is soon on his way back to El Dorado to warn Sherriff Hara of what is coming with the help of Mississippi.
Cole, Mississippi and a few good old friends try to get Hara sober to fight of these hired gun hands but will they be successful in their task and can they work together to fight off the baddies?
I was not happy with this film choice as I do not like westerns and certainly do not have much of a liking for John Wayne. I have seen a few of his films now and been quite surprised by them but this film was not one of them. I have to say it was one of the worst I have seen him in. He plays the usual cowboy type character and wears his trademark red shirt and brown waist coat for the majority of the film. There was nothing different or new about this role from previous ones and I don’t think he put much imagination into this character in trying to make him different.
The story was OK but so predictable and nothing really stood out for me. There were a lot of good characters in the film thought who did bring an element of wit and humour. I thought Robert Mitchum did a great job playing the part of Sheriff J P Hara and he did make his character very believable and he really did put a lot of thought into the way he would play his character when he was an alcoholic. Also the actor who took the role of Mississippi seemed to outshine John Wayne as he was much more likable and realistic in the story.
The film as set a long time ago in El Dorado in America and I think that they did do a good job with the scenery and setting for the film and the costumes all looked very authentic and suitable for the year of the film. I am pleased to say that there were some wonderful shots of the mountains and countryside which for me was the best part of the film. The music was very good indeed and it did help with the feel and emotions of the film. The music director does deserve a lot of credit for the time and effort he put into all of the music as it did help make a bland ordinary film slightly more watch able.
The DVD we have is the 100th Anniversary edition and it does not contain any bonus material but this is not an issue for me as I never have any interest in these features anyway and this film certainly would not have made me want to watch them.
The running time of this film is 121 minutes which I felt to be just on the long side and think that it would have been just the same if they would have shortened it to perhaps 90 minutes. The certificate on this film is a PG as it does contain mild language and violence but I did not notice any bad language and the violence was just a few gun fights and certainly nothing which would scare of upset children.
I am not going to recommend this film as it was just average and I have seen John Wayne in much better films with more engaging and interesting.
