Advantages: Another good John Wayne Western Disadvantages: Storyline too similar to Rio Bravo for my liking
...hear that the Sheriff in El Dorado has had his heart broken and as a consequence is doing nothing but drinking all day and night. Because of this, Jason has hired another gunman, equally as fast as Wayne, and is planning on using the Sheriff's demise as his opportunity to take over the MacDonald land.
As Wayne feels guilty about the earlier death of MacDonald's son, he goes back to El Dorado with his young new friend to face up to Jason.

However, the story does become quite dragged out - while all the initial scene-setting does fall into place, I did wonder while watching the film if it was really necessary, and perhaps the film could have been written differently to incorporate these elements more concisely. It's also quite a long film for a Western: just over the two hour mark, and although I enjoyed the film, it did feel like a long two hours.
However, this may have ...

Advantages: Keeps the kids happy without subjecting you to boredom Disadvantages:
...to watch the Road to El Dorado. Not only will you be able to sit back and relax, but the kids will enjoy it as well. Anything that keeps my lovely little sister and her two friends quiet for over an hour deserves a reward of the highest calibre. It contains witty remarks for the older audience as well as some great scenes and comic moments. Conniving and cunning characters who grow to become real heroes (especially since they are able to entertain ... ...guys with strange smiles that scared even me! A perfect family film or refuge for those babysitting, it appeals to all ages. It contains something for everyone. The only thing bad about it is that in some places it does try a little too hard to appeal to older audiences so some of the remarks will not be fully understood by young children, but the colourful scenes and characters is enough to keep them happy throughout. ...

Advantages: Film suitable for the whole family Disadvantages: None
...preview of The Road to El Dorado I would recommend it as a family friend. I took my 16 year old son, who expected to be bored but sat watching it intently and occasionally laughing. I also took my 9 year old son who enjoyed it as well. The storyline was good with many signs of humour, both for adults and children. The music was from Elton John and Tim Rice and was the standard you would expect from them. Watch out especially for the horse. I really ...

Advantages: See how Westerns should be made Disadvantages: None at all
El Dorado will appeal to all types - those who like action and gung-ho shooting, to those who like romance and drama. What I am in other words saying is that this film has a bit of everything all blended into one to create, in my opinion, the perfect western. And if that wasn't all it has some superb actors to drive it along - such as the legendary John Wayne and Robert Mitchum who both give heart-wrenching performances. This film is centered around ... ...Wayne) who rejects an offer to be taken on by Bart Jason, who wants him to wage war ,as it were, against the MacDonald family. Thornton then goes in search of another job and teams up with a knife-throwing kid and together, with the help of a drunk sheriff (Mitchum) and another trusty cowboy pit themselves against Bart Jason and his gang who are up to no good. An excellent plot and extremely well executed with some good rootin'-tootin' shootin' alongside ...

DVD Description
In the town of El Dorado, wealthy landowner Bart Jason (Ed Asner) is embroiled in a struggle with the MacDonald family, who own a large amount of land just outside town lines. Jason hires gunman Cole Thornton (John Wayne) to scare the MacDonalds in hope that they'll back down. Cole is pleased to discover that his old friend J.B. (Robert Mitchum) is now the sheriff of the town. The sheriff warns Cole that involvement with the crooked Jason will get him arrested. Further circumstances entwine the hired gun with the MacDonald family, and he sets out to destroy Jason. Hawks's unheralded Western, with a fine script by Leigh Brackett (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK), features plot similarities to his earlier classic RIO BRAVO.
