...make his picture worth watching. Eight Legged Freaks is a very successful and entertaining film because the director has done just this, and has clearly had a lot of fun along the way.
In a small Arizona town called Prosperity, things are not looking so good. Money is tight, unemployment is high and things are set to get worse with the closure of the town’s mine. When Chris McCormick returns to the town some ten years after he first left he ... ...to say, the stars of Eight Legged Freaks are the spiders. The special effects employed to bring the creatures to life are extremely effective and very realistic. Eight Legged Freaks may have been inspired by those 1960s monster B-movies, but there is nothing second rate about the monsters that roam Prosperity. Several types of exotic beast are brought to life, including jumping spiders, trap-door spiders and an enormous hairy tarantula, and each ...

Advantages: Great humour, Just very funny Disadvantages: This will hardly make you think
My brother sends us videos every week. Well, he used to now its DVDs. Well, actually they're for my kids. Thing is, he's very generous and keeps sending the latest DVDs ever since he gave us a DVD player at Christmas. Sooooo...if you want to borrow just about any cartoon type kiddies film then I'm yer man. Hmmmmm...well, not on this occasion. It was with a wee bit of consternation that this week's brown paper wrapper contained Eight-Legged Freaks. ... ...it's a 12 rating but ma bro' was a little put out at the inference that it wouldn't be suitable. So like all good responsible parents, we gave it a viewing before letting the kids at it!

Advantages: Some great moments. Disadvantages: David Arquette's the only freak in this film.
...The whole joke of Eight Legged Freaks is that it’s a spoof on 50’s horror movies and the campy overacting. Everyone else manages to be ludicrously serious and demonstrate skill, whereas David Arquette ruins every opportunity at humour by acting as though he’s in Schindlers List when he’s meant to be funny, and acting as though he were in Airplane when he’s trying to be serious. The comedy comes from playing it straight in a silly situation, but Arquette ... ...of emotion, and it’s hilarious. Eight Legged Freaks feels a bit like a joke stretched too thin, and should really be no more than an extended sketch on a comedy series. It’s never quite as funny as it deserves to be which is a shame because the set up is great, it just falls flat when it tries to be a spoof.
The plot is suitably ludicrous as you would expect but is just a little too self conscious to perfectly capture the naïve campy charm that ...

Eight legged freaks is a modern take on old fashioned B-movies, the ones with creatures from space that take place in small american towns. Except that instead of creatures from space we have giant spiders that have been munching on insects from a water supply polluted with toxic waste. the small town prosperity is in trouble, the local mayor has invested in an ostrich farm and a huge mall that noone visits and the local mine ... ...that insults my intelligence and eight legged freaks wears it's heart on it's sleeve and makes no apologies for being a shocking, comedy bug fest. it's a bit like a monkey who sit's i his cage picking his backside all day and gurning at passers by, he doesn't care that you laugh so you don't feel guilty for standing pointing and chuckling away, he's put a lot of thought into his daily routine, yes he could try reading, talking and doing sign language, ...

Advantages: Great Effects, Lot's of fun, Some good scares Disadvantages: Will scare Aracnophobes silly
...won't find such perils with Eight Legged Freaks as it's strictly for mindless entertainment, stupidity and sheer enjoyment. With a premise that harks back to the old B-movies of the 50's we find ourselves in the small american town of Prosperity. The town is in a slump and everywhere is in danger of closing down. However some toxic waste finds itself in the local waters by way of accident and soon the spiders at the local exotic spider farm are getting ... ...has to contend with the eight legged freaks causing havoc and destruction on Proseperity befoer it's too late. Nearly everyone has a slight fear of spiders for no apparant reason. Most are harmless and actually get rid of flys etc, they do you a favour. But if have the fear then imagine what it would be like to come face to face with a spider the size of a car. It's not really a nice thought but that's what you get to see on screen in this film. ...

DVD Description
New Zealand-born Ellory Elkayem's EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS is a ridiculously irreverent romp that pays homage to American b-movies of the 1950s. Set in the nearly bankrupt mining town of Prosperity, Arizona, the film opens with the timely return of Chris McCormack (David Arquette). On the outskirts of town, a spider-loving eccentric discovers that water from a nearby river has a steroid-like effect on his tiny creatures. Unfortunately, that's because it has been contaminated by a toxic substance. It isn't long before the now-monstrous spiders are terrorizing Prosperity's townspeople. Taking refuge in the Prosperity Mall, Chris and his fellow cohorts--the beautiful Sheriff Sam Parker (Kari Wuhrer), her kids Mike (Scott Terra) and Ashley (Scarlett Johansson), Deputy Pete (Rick Overton), and paranoid radio DJ Harlan (Doug E. Doug)--search for a way to destroy the gigantic monsters before they are destroyed. Handpicked by producers Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, writer-director Elkayem rises to the challenge. He successfully retains the lighthearted, low-budget feel of similar-toned 1950s classics (TARANTULA, THEM!) and merges it with a modern, big-budget aesthetic, to create an outrageously fresh contribution to the "mutant bug" genre.
