Found by an over eager Avon Lady after his inventor has snuffed it, Edward Scissorhands (Johnny Depp) is brought into pastel perfect idyllic suburbia to become the hairdresser/ topiarist of choice. Tim Burton’s personal fairytale crystallised many of his favourite themes - the outcast as hero, the weirdness that hides behind normality - and served up trademark arresting imagery but what was new here for Burton was the emotional timbre behind the bonkers visuals, a quality helped immeasurably by Depp’s poignant rendering of the bruised outsider.This magical film is a must for all Burton fans.
