In Tim Burton's EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, a suburban fairy tale with incredibly imaginative sets, an Avon lady, Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest), discovers the half-finished experiment--a...
more...man/monster named Edward (Johnny Depp)--of a mad scientist (played magically by Vincent Price) living in the neighborhood's old abandoned castle. The scientist died before replacing the shy man's large shears with real hands. When Peg attempts to bring Edward into her suburban world, to live among her skeptical family (husband Alan Arkin and daughter Winona Ryder) and gossipy neighbors, his hands--dangerous yet capable of creating things of great beauty--make for some awkward, funny, and poignant situations: Edward as a topiary gardener, Edward as a cutting-edge hair stylist. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS is a story about tolerance, difference, and creativity as much as it is a story of a young man's coming of age (the young man in question is, of course, a monster). In the ironically surreal world of Edward's suburban community, he must try to find his place in it, and in the world at large.

INTRODUCTION:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++

I am a huge fan of Johnny Depp, and an even bigger fan of Tim Burton and his bizarre, and often dark, films. Even with huge expectations for this film, i was definitely not disappointed.

PLOT:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The film begins with the story of an old inventor who builds Edward from scratch in his dark and gloomy (and rather spooky) mansion, but dies before he has a chance to finish, leaving scissors for his hands (hence the name Edward Scissorhands).

Edward is eventually discovered when the friendly local Avon lady (Dianne West) calls at the house. She takes pity on Edward and brings him back to live with her in the too-immaculate suburban neighbourhood, full of judgmental curtain twitchers.

Here, Edward falls in love with Kim (WInona Ryder), and this leads to some particularly touching moments, especially as you know already that the relationship is doomed from the start and will never end happily every after (which is a refreshing change from other fairytales).

Edward struggles to fit in in the neighbourhood as he is regarded as a freak by the plentiful gossiping housewives, and ends up puttings his skills to good use by offering radical new haircuts to the neighbours, and taking up topiary to produce amazing shapes out of the neighbours hedges (yes, it sounds very odd, but it works!)

But Edward is not used to being around people, and eventually his lack of control with his scissorhands ends up causing a tragic accident and the neighbours immediately turn on him...

MY OPINION
++++++++++++++++++++

I absolutely loved this film and many moments will remain with me, mainly due to the fact that I felt the utmost empathy for the Edward all of the way through.

A particularly heartbreaking scene is where Edward is having his first meal with his surrogate family, and just watching him attempt to eat with his scissorhands is enough to make me cry!

A fabulous and enchanting story with some extremely touching scenes (get the tissues ready!).

On the DVD, the special features included are:

Tim Burton Commentary
Danny Elfman Commentary
Featurette
Interview Clips
2 Trailers
1.85:1 ratio enhanced for 16:9 widescreen TVs
Dolby Digital 4.0 Surround
Subtitles: English for the hearing impaired

So some interesting features but nothing special. But the film completely make up for this!
