In Tim Burton's EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, a suburban fairy tale with incredibly imaginative sets, an Avon lady, Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest), discovers the half-finished experiment--a...
more...man/monster named Edward (Johnny Depp)--of a mad scientist (played magically by Vincent Price) living in the neighborhood's old abandoned castle. The scientist died before replacing the shy man's large shears with real hands. When Peg attempts to bring Edward into her suburban world, to live among her skeptical family (husband Alan Arkin and daughter Winona Ryder) and gossipy neighbors, his hands--dangerous yet capable of creating things of great beauty--make for some awkward, funny, and poignant situations: Edward as a topiary gardener, Edward as a cutting-edge hair stylist. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS is a story about tolerance, difference, and creativity as much as it is a story of a young man's coming of age (the young man in question is, of course, a monster). In the ironically surreal world of Edward's suburban community, he must try to find his place in it, and in the world at large.

PLOT:
* * * * *
Peg Boggs local Avon lady
is having a hard day, and decides to try her luck at an old mansion to see if anyone will be interesting in Avon's cosmetics. She enters the house, and notices beautiful sculpures formed from hedges. Inside, she meets Edward, a man with scissors for hands, strange wild hair, and a black leather metal attire.

She takes him home, and introduces him to her family. He begins to settle in well, been a hit with the neighbours, cutting hedges. and cutting hair. That is until his life is turned upside by Kim, Peg's beautiful teenage daughter. Ed starts to fall in love with Kim, but she regards him no more than a freak. Ed becomes tormented by Kim's boyfriend Jim and his relationship with Kim. However, he's a gentle soul (despite his hands) and lets things rest.

Jim needs to buy a new car, and persuades Kim to coax Ed into breaking into Jim's house and stealing his parent's new hi-tech gear. Ed does so for his love for Kim, but gets caught out. The nieghbours begin to talk, and Ed is accussed of raping Joyce Monroe (an evil neighbour) after he refuses to sleep with her.

Things start to turn from bad to worse for poor Ed, but soon Kim begins to realise she's falling for him, but her mother and everyone else begin to wonder if Ed would just be better off 'back up there' in the masion where no harm can be doen to him...

MY THOUGHTS:
* * * * * * * * * * * *
I watched this film because it starred Johnny Depp, and dispite his good looks which are totally illusioned from us in this film, it has become my favourite ever film. Depp completely out-shines his co star Rider (who he then dated) as the gentle snip-happy strange man. It's heartbreaking and will make most cry, it's also insanely funny and entertaining. While the costumes and set are a little low-budget, Tim Burton (director) never fails to impress.

Recommended highly.
