This movie is nothing short of bizarre. And yet it is also one of the most spellbinding and enchanting fairy stories ever committed to camera. Once again, Tim Burton manages to turn what sounds like a complete pile of tosh, into a visual delight packed with superb performances and a story to match.
Johnny Depp plays the a modern day Frankenstein’s monster, who lives alone in his master’s shambling gothic castle above a small suburban town full of gossipy old women. However, before his master’s death, Vincent Price(who plays the part) was unable to attach flesh hands to his creation and so he must go through ‘life’ with ‘hands’ comprised of kitchen knives and garden shears found around the castle. The castle is thought of as being haunted by the bogeyman and kids dare each other to investigate etc. and Edward is isolated from humanity, that is until kindly Avon lady Meg(played b y Dianne Wiest) takes him under her wing and brings him down into the town to stay with her and everyone takes to him(eventually) mainly because of his willingness to help and his multiple uses as a hedge trimmer etc. . Whilst there he falls in love with Kim(Winona Ryder) and thereforward develops a tragic love story, as Edward is blamed for an accident which everyone is all too willing to believe was done on purpose because he is different...
The movie sounds completely bizarre and yes, it is, but some enchanting performances coupled with some stunning imagery and gothic sets make this a movie you would be a fool to miss. Depp’s performance here is superb, a career best if you ask me and both Winona Ryder and Vincent Price are perfectly cast in their roles - Price’s could not have been played by anybody else of course and as his last film its a fitting tribute to a master of his genre. When Depp gazes through the camera lens on a TV show at the untouchable Ryder its enough to make a grown man cry, yet the movie is full of such wonderful moments which capture complete joy in one instance and then utter despair in the next.
This is a classic movie which has also recently been released on DVD format with some extra bits including one of Price’s last interviews, as well as interviews with the rest of the cast and some of Burton’s original movie sketches. If you have never seen this movie before then I suggest you rush out and rent it now. You will not be disappointed.
