I was surprised by the lack of fuss marking this film's release on DVD. It just kind of crept out, rather like Edwards first appearance as he emerges from the shadows of the Castle he live in.
Tim Burton is one of my Gods, sharing equally billing with Stuart Pearce, Frankie Howerd, Sean Connery...no really...stop laughing. Burton films are just wonderful things, full of energy and displaying his genuine love for the medium. This man loves film, and it is a pleasure to watch his movies. Edward Scissorhands is one of his finest, a slight tale which retreads the Beauty and the Beast formula, but with magnificent wit and imagination.
Edward is created by an old inventor, living a solitary life in a typically gothic Burton castle. The inventor dies before completing Edward and he is left with scissors for hands. How this film ever got funding with a premise like that is quite astounding, but when the Director has so skilfully reinvented the Batman series, i guess you throw money at the guy. Anyway, Edward is discovered by a roving Avon lady and is brought to live in the most hellish recreation of suburbia ever to grace our screens. Naturally things go wrong, and after the novelty period has worn off, people come to suspect and bully the fragile and innocent Edward. In reality it is all quite predictable and old fare, but this is a magical film that should be seen by everyone.
Johnny Depp gives a moving performance as Edward, with great comic support from Alan Arkin and Dianne West. It is splendid to see Vincent Price, albeit briefly in a lovely cameo as the Inventor.
The film washes over you, and you barely notice the time go by, it is a pleasure from beginning to end, everybody giving their all. The acting is all first rate, as is the direction, production design - the pastels and decoration of Suburbia never fail to make me shudder, cinematography - particularly the exteriors of the castle, and Danny Elfman is on form turning in another great score. Naturally i have to mention the make up and special effects, with Stan Winston deserving great credit for making Edward reality.
the transfer onto DVD is great, no speckling or noise, the colours are full of life, whilst the darker shades are full of depth. The sound is good, though presented disappointingly only in pro-logic surround.
Extras include two great commentaries, one by Burton, the other by Elfman. The featurette is standard American TV fare, everyone talking so earnestly about such a fantastical tale, and is resultingly quite a cringeworthy 10 minutes. There are also interviews, trailers, and best of all some concept artwork.

Hey - sorry for the H - I'd just like to have known more about the extras (not just the 'cringemaking' one...). Otherwise, a very good review :) Cheers, Kate
