It seems almost strange that such a fantastic tale could be woven in todays setting. You can always convert old tales into the modern, but this is original(even if it does lend heavily from Frankenstein) and Tim Burton has really helped to make it seem like it came from the same hand as the brothers Grimm.
The film does smack certainly of Beetlejuice, another one of Burton's pictures but I can't say which came first. The deserted house on the hill, the nightmarish quality of the main character...and...Wionna Ryder.
Edward is a man who has been made by a professor(played by...guess who? Vincent Price). Unfortunately, one day 'he didn't wake up' and Edward was left incomplete, his hands were not finished, and were nothing but sharp scissor blades.
Enter the Avon Lady. Tired of getting the door slammed in her face(the pink door, the green door, the day-blue door...take your pick) decides to give the eerie mansion up on the hill a try. There she discovers a quiet, but on the surface terrifying Edaward, but in true fairytale style, she adopts him and takes him home.
Edward adepts and is accepted remarkably well by the neighbourhood, employed to cut the hedges(into most unusual designs), dog's hair, and women's hair. But not everyone accepts him, and his child-like naivety is exploited by several members of the community, resulting in the whole neighbourhood turning against him.
It's truly tragic, a human's worst nightmare, everything he touches he harms. There could never be true love in his life, yet it was probably the one thing he always wanted.
Johnny Depp plays the role brilliantly, and Tim Burton has plenty of sly digs in at American surburbia(take note of the individually day-glo painted houses, the men all leaving for work at the same time, the women collecting gaggle like to discuss Ed) but manages to portray something which could have so easily descended into a hammer horror ham up.
