Combining Tim Burton's clearly dark and disturbing style with Johnny Depp's obvious talent is a good reason to go and see this film. Winona Ryder is one reason to stay away. Personally, I think she is a bit hammy and annoying to be such a big star. South Park had it right about her in the movie. The film is very emotional, and will bring out tears from the more vulnerable of the females in the audience, and Elfman's soudtrack adds to this for an adequate effect. In all frankness, I didn't like it that much, but he does cut some good hedges! The directing is good, as is Depp's portrayal of the bladed man, but Ryder pisses me off too much to enjoy it. Good ending, though, very chick flick.
All in all, it deserves to be a classic.
