...like a piece of crap. Educating Rita is one of them. Willy Russell, who also wrote Shirley Valentine and Blood Brothers is a wonderful writer, and it's made apparent in Educating Rita how good he really is. He's one of the few writers that mae the audience cheer, cry and laugh at the same time. He is absolute genius. His best talent of all, though, was how he managed to make two actors' parts portrayed so well. Those actors being Julie Walters, putting ... ...career in major films.
Educating Rita is a comedy-drama, and you have as much laughs as you do enjoyment. Walters is her usual comical self, and even Caine can be funny in parts of the film. That's what entertains me. A comedy-drama with a story, but one that can makes you laugh but also cry and appreciate the brilliance of the film. That's what it is, because Walters plays the determined Rita so well, that for many yeas after watching the film, ...

Educating Rita is basically the story of how two people meet each other and change each others lives. It's very simple and not a lot actually goes on during the film but it's an incredibly touching, entertaining film that I can watch over and over again without getting bored!
The film revolves around Rita, played by Julie Walters, a Scouse hairdresser who is bored with her life. She is in a dead marriage to Denny, who is nice enough but just cannot ... ...What really makes Educating Rita work are the two main stars - Julie Walters and Michael Caine. There is no sexual chemistry at all but the pair work as friends. They are so believable and there's this familiar look in their eyes during their scenes that make you believe they are good friends in real life who know each other well. They make a cracking pair and I don't think anyone other people could have done the roles justice!
At first both characters ...

Advantages: An educational rags to riches story; great acting Disadvantages: Dodgy 80s music!
...but one that does is Educating Rita. I can't remember the first time I saw it, but seeing it again reminded me of what a moving film this is and how aiming for and achieving a goal can change your life. It is very dated, but that doesn't seem to matter, particularly with the acting skills of Julie Walters and Michael Caine thrown in to the mix along with an excellent screenplay.

Nevertheless, despite the time in which it was set, Educating Rita is well worth watching and I highly recommend it. ...stage, one of these being Educating Rita. In 1983, director Lewis Gilbert took Russell's play and adapted it for the big screen, making it into a feature film and drawing in top actor Michael Caine. It was also Julie Walters' first major feature film.
The script was originally intended for the stage, and was thus just a dialogue, taking place entirely in an office. For the screen, it was amended and several locations were used to make it more appealing. ... ...who are merely spoken about in the original play.
The plot, however, does not really change. Essentially, it is the tale of a young working class woman, Rita (Julie Walters) who embarks on an Open University course to study literature. She finds herself lumbered with Dr Frank Bryant (Michael Caine), a grumpy English prof with a penchant for a bit of alcohol on a frequent basis. The pair of them struggle through her course together, becoming platonic ...

Advantages: A heartwarming tale Disadvantages: There really isn't any
I first saw Educating Rita about 3 years ago when it came as a free disc within the Daily Mirror. As it was a free disc I didn't hold out much hope for it but when I placed it into the DVD player my mum exclaimed that she'd seen it before and that it wasn't half bad. She wasn't wrong; I really enjoyed watching it and have since watched it numerous more times.

The story it tells is extremely true to life and is not only told in a touching way but also in a way that pulls the audience along on an emotionally moving journey, in which the lead characters find a new lease of life through each other. Dr Frank Bryant was once an extremely successful university professor of literature who could spend hours reflecting ...

Advantages: Double the fun and entertainment Disadvantages: Have you got a spare 200 + minutes?!
...First things first, Michael Caine is a serious talent and I have enjoyed a great number of his films, and some of my most favourite owned DVD's star the man, such as EducatingRita, Get Carter, Zulu, The Italian Job, and The Ipcress file, to name but a few (might get around to reviewing some of them one day!).
I always have faith that whatever role I see Michael Caine perform, he pulls it off (no pun intended, well maybe a little one … a little pun that is!) one hundred percent.
"Get your knee off the steering wheel!" …. "I've told you before, careful where you put your legs!"
What a couple of great opening lines to a film!
Michael Caine is Alfie Elkins, a philosophical womaniser…

DVD Description
Dr. Frank Bryant (Michael Caine) is an alcoholic professor of literature headed for dire straits. Rita (Julie Walters) is a frustrated young housewife filled with wanderlust. When the two meet as student and teacher, no lecture hall can contain their attraction for one another. As Rita engages her teacher in a fuzzy romance, she matures and discovers a new side of herself, but in the end she must choose either her marriage or the magnetic Dr. Bryant. EDUCATING RITA reunites director Lewis Gilbert with star Michael Caine--they previously worked together in the 1966 drama ALFIE--and once again their collaboration is staggering. Bryant's shortcomings as a drunk and a womanizer are detestable, yet still Gilbert allows viewers to empathize with his character. In EDUCATING RITA, Gilbert once again demonstrates that he is not only a master of commanding the camera but a master at deconstructing the human heart as well.

Review: "...An irresistible story....RITA is one of those memorable screen personas that seem to be lacking nowadays...Julie Walters injects her with just the right mix of comedy and pathos..." (Variety, 04/05/1983)
