I saw EdTV a while back but saw it again last night and I thought it was really funny. I know many people think it’s just a rip off of the Truman show but it is quite different. Many say it has the same concept, which is reality TV but the genres and story of the two are quite different.
The movie starts out with small time TV executive Cynthia Topping (Ellen DeGeneres) and her idea for a new reality TV show called true TV. She explains the ... ...follow them around with a camera for one whole month 24/7. There is a big risk involved with this show but the TV Company isn’t very popular so they need to do something to make them bigger. The person they pick is small time country boy Ed Pekurny (Matthew McConaughy) who works in a video store. His life isn’t very interesting and the shows bosses aren’t very happy with Cynthia’s choice but she guarantees this will be good.

EdTV is supposed to be a bit like The Truman Show, but I’ve never watched The Truman Show (although it is on my list of ‘too watch’ videos) so I couldn’t really comment on that one, although I should think it follows the same basic plot. So, if you liked The Truman Show, EdTV might be one you should watch, and vice versa!
EdTV isn’t your usual film full of action and special effects, neither does it have a plot as such, ... ...- - - EdTV is amazingly very addictive, just like the real life shows we have witnessed on our screens over the last couple of years. You really do want to know what is going to happen next, but you also feel for the guy. He’s stuck with people following him, he’s not a violent or angry guy, so he just has to stick with it, but you feel good when he gets his own way in the end and lives happily ever after.
The soundtracks pretty good ...

Advantages: Some very good one liners, entertaining Disadvantages: Released too soon perhaps
...and in March 1999, when EDtv was released, a lot of people thought it was pure pie in the sky, and it was probably something that would prove popular on the first outing, but why would people just want to watch people? Why would they indeed? Directed by legendary (although i think it is a case of the hype exceeding the talent) ex Happy Days actor Ron Howard, EDtv takes a look at the effects on someone of having the world watch them every minute of ... ...city and just becomes another EDtv viewer. The station then start to involve Ed's family more, and his mother and stepfather played by Sally Kirkland and Martin Landau are perfect reality TV fodder, as they play up to the camera with hilarous results, however life as they have come to know it is threatened when Ray and Ed's father played by Dennis Hopper returns hoping to get his share of the limelight, and maybe some cash along the way, whilst none ...

Advantages: Entertaining film with good extras on the DVD Disadvantages: None
Before I start this review I think it’s worth me clearing up the similarities between The Truman Show and Ed TV. The Truman Show is a fantasy in which everyone tries to hide the truth from one man. The idea is he’s living in a film set and doesn’t even know it. Ed TV is a drama with comedy elements about someone who allows a camera crew to follow him around 24/7. It shows how it affects his life and the people around him. This shows ... ...The story is a cable network producer has the idea of broadcasting an ordinary man's life - every waking moment of his day. Ed Pekurny is the white trash star of the show. The ratings start to rise when Ed falls in love with his brother’s girlfriend and Ed becomes an overnight celebrity. As more skeletons come out of the family closet, the more popular Ed becomes. When his family start to fall out with him and his girlfriend leaves him because ...

Advantages: Funny and entertaining, well-directed Disadvantages: None
Edtv is basically a cross between Big Brother and the Truman Show. The humour is cheap and the story is breezy and slick, superbly directed by Ron Howard Edtv is actually quite a gem of a film.
Ed is just a normal, ordinary American until a television channel DESPERATE for viewers approaches him to be filmed 24 hours a day for a new TV show. No scripts – No edits 24 Hours a day. (Well that’s the catchy slogan to the film that appears ... ...a cast that defines star-studded Edtv was a sure hit and was popular with filmgoers and critics. For gods sake even Jonathon Ross praised the film – “Breezy, Slick, Funny” he wrote in his film column in the Mirror. Nick Fisher of the Sun who somehow manages to put down practically ever decent film even praises Edtv – “Classy, Funny and intelligent comedy…shouldn’t be missed.”
The story to Edtv sounds ...
