Following his success as stand-up comic and theatrical performer, Eddie Izzard has turned ... more
his attentions to the written word. His first book,Dress to Kill, is a series of conversations with writer/presenter David Quantick that claim to reach "deep inside the most original head in Britain". Presented as a mixture of opinion and autobiography,Dress to Killis a riveting, witty read that features a number of stunning photographs by Steve Double. These capture Izzard on and off the stage in London, New York, and San Francisco, illustrating the subject's colourful persona, not to mention vast wardrobe and astonishing array of nail varnishes.Izzard employs his unique conversational style to describe his journey from his birth in South Yemen through his itinerant childhood to coming out as a transvestite, and finally becoming a comic, media personality, and film star. Those who have seen Izzard perform will immediately recognise the digressive meandering of his stream-of-consciousness anecdotes and monologues. Using this to great effect while discussing such topics as comedy, popular culture, sexuality, and hairy mammals, he generally succeeds in firing the imagination. However, as anyone who has seen his shows and is later asked to "repeat one of his jokes" will discover, delivery of his material is of the essence. Confessing at the end of the book that he doesn't write his act down, we discover why, as occasionally it fails to transfer to the written page.Although not as incisive as the bold claim on the inlay,Dress to Killreveals the world of and according to Eddie Izzard, a world fascinating and humorous enough to be enjoyed by a much wider audience than his current fan base. --Robert Brookes

Advantages: All new material, So funny even Americans can get it, The opening Alcatraz segment - pure genius. Also, there's a book that you can get! Disadvantages: Some might find it a bit TOO political

Eddie Izzard's fifth video release is the first that sees him stray from the relative comfort and safety of these British Isles and dare to have his gig recorded in that bastion of the American judiciary system, San Francisco.
Opening on a video of tourists going for a visit to Alcatraz, accompanied by Eddie's commentary ("An FBI agent takes close-up photos of someone's kneecaps" and "Drugs money is exchanged for favours and... well, drugs, mainly"), the gig proper then begins. No big book this time, but plenty of big laughs.
Being in America seems to open up a lot of new areas for Izzard, and so we are treated to his take on Scooby Doo and Shaggy ("Two of the greatest characters in American literature"), JFK's (played by James Mason) visit to Berlin ("Ich bin ein Berliner"... but a Berliner is a type of doughnut they have over there") and the moon landings ("Help, there's a monster behind me!"). As well as this, he explores the origins of the Church of England, World War 2, Hitler, The Heimlich Manouver and San Fransisco's stupid no smoking in bars policy amongst other things. The Church of England section also leads onto one of Eddie's greatest (in my opinion) pieces - how the Spanish Inquisition would have been under CofE ("Talk, talk will you!" "But it hurts..." "Well, loosen it up a bit") as well as the fact that you just can't have extreme points of view in the CofE ("What would it be? It'd be tea and cakes or death wouldn't it?" And that's easy to answer - 'Cake or death!?' 'Erm, cake please'")
Although at first viewing, it may seem like he introduces Hitler a little TOO much, over time, you won't even notice it any more. And besides which, there is far too much good stuff on here to let a tiny thing like Hitler get you down.
**UPDATE**
Whilst walking back to my flat at about 11:30 last night, I looked up to cross the road and found myself looking straight at the man himself! Yes, that's right, I was within just a few yards of Izzard. Unfortunately, I didn't have the bottle to go say hi, and just carried on walking. Besides which, he was with mates, and I didn't want to interrupt, but it was still v. exciting! (Yes, I know I'm sad, but the guy is a hero of mine, so I deserve just a little bit of slack on this one!)
Advantages: Funny, Clever, Interesting Disadvantages: Cant think of any
...My sister buys a video, Eddie Izzard, I think to myself who is this guy dressed like a woman, or dressed like a real cool guy but has make up on. At first I was reluctant to watch it “Turn it off, its boring me” I kept yelling at my sister, I wasn’t paying much attention to the guy at first. Then one summer morning I couldn’t go to sleep it was around 3.30 and I was so tired, but I couldn’t go to sleep. So I go downstairs ... ...I watch almost everything, and Eddie makes some good points about films. For example;
“Saving Private Ryan, was about the 2nd World War, but there was not a single Brit. in the film, Tom hanks never asked the British where Private Ryan was, and we could of told him we all knew, could of saved him 2 hours.”
“In Star Wars you never see the Death Star’s canteen for all the staff, why is that?”
And then he would act out ...

Advantages: Eddie can take the p*ss out the Americans without them even realising! Disadvantages: He talks about the Queen Mother - who's unfortunately dead now!
This is Eddie Izzard's fifth show released on video and is set on the infamous prisoner island of Alcatraz in San Francisco. This is his first show in America and possibly one of his best!
For those of you not familiar with the 'Man' he is a stand up comedian who can everthing funny ranging from the Big Bang to dogfood! He is also a transvestite which just adds that little bit of glamour and glitz to his fantastic outfits and stage lights. He made ... ...focusing on tourists visiting Alcatraz. Eddie here adds his hilarious and frequently irrelevant comments to the 'drug dealers' and 'prisoners' travelling to Alcatraz.
As this is Eddie's first show in America he can experiment with other jokes, like when JFK visited Berlin stating he was a doughnut in German! Eddie still takes us through his favourite thoughts of the wars and Hitler - 'The mass murdering f**ckhead! - as many importent historians ...

Advantages: The 1st Battalion Transvestite Brigade Airborne wing Disadvantages: You will annoy your mates by constantly quoting it
Eddie Izzard probably the best stand up comic in the World (bar Billy Connolly) and who can take that away from someone who can take the absolute mick out of the american audience and leave them dying of laughter like i was.
This DVD is a film of his show on Alcatraz island in San Fransico or "The City" for those of you who have seen the DVD. It was Eddies breakthrough show to the US and won an Emmy. For those of you who dont know who eddie izzard ... ...tourist heading to Alcatraz, with Eddie talking hilarious bollocks over the top. It then cuts to Eddie coming on stage with the first lines "I'm a professional transvestite so I can run about in heels and not fall over" as you do. His act is mostly about teaching the Americans about two things they know nothing about, history and everywhere else in the world than America. Such as the formation of the Anglican church and the two World Wars "Hitler ...

Advantages: Izzard is a stand up genius! Disadvantages: Overly political at times.
Lets start out with this. Eddie Izzard is a great stand up comedian. However, those of you who like to be told jokes should buy a Chubby Brown video.
This video is set in San Francisco ("not San Fran, no apparently not, its THE CITY!). This means Izzard starts with a short tour including a hilarious offbeat look at trams and the prison of Alcatraz.
For observational humour Eddie is second to none. For those of you who remember "Glorious" this video ... ...it is great to see Eddie ripping apart American gun culture and the American dream (see title). He doesn't stop at Americans though he also takes apart the British Empire, Ottoman Empire(famous for its furniture) and the Germans.
The great thing about Izzard is he does all of this with you agreeing with every word even the things about your own culture.
With many laugh out loud moments this is a must buy for all fans of observational humour.

MMVI EddieIzzard live Box Set
Unrepeatable, Definate Article, Glorious, DresstoKill, Circle & Sexie all in one beautiful box set.
I have one question for starters. Do you like EddieIzzard?
If the answer is YES! then buy this box set! It's Eddie at his absolute best with so much choice of what to watch. The shows featured range from 1994 to 2003, although Eddie has been around a lot longer!
Unrepeatable is the very first glimpse we have in this fine selection. Filmed in 1994 and including DVD extras such as an Audio Commentary, Trivia Track, Photo Gallery and a Bleeped Audio Track. The audio tracks are definately worth a listen once you've watched the show properly as its Eddie, seemingly off the cuff making remarks on his own work - classic comedy.
Definate Article is next in the showcase, filmed in 1996. This is ...
Advantages: Bargain price, watchable again and again Disadvantages: Can you have too much choice?
After losing my old original EddieIzzard videos, I was more than happy to see that a box set of his greatest comedy performances had been released. It features six dvd's of his best works, such as the hilariously funny Glorious, DressedToKill and his latest comedy show Sexie.
EddieIzzard has an unusual style of comedy and a great presence on stage. I have seen him live once in Manchester when I went to watch Sexie, and Mr. Izzard walked on stage wearing a dress! He is a comic genius and this box set represents the best value for money you can buy. I bought my box set from Amazon for under £20, which is an amazing price for 6 top quality, laugh a minute, fun for the whole famil dvd's.
The set contains disc 1 - Unrepeatable
Disc 2 - Definate Article
Disc 3 - Glorious (my personal favourite!)
Disc 4 - DressToKill
Disc 5 ...
Advantages: So much content Disadvantages: Boring DVD menus
When i bought this product i payed £20 but it was worth so much more, i often find stand up dvd's expensive so to find all of the wonderful eddieizzards material in an unbelievably cheap box set i couldn't believe it. If you have seen his stuff before you will know what to expect but if you have not where have you been. With some of the most original material ever, some others only dream they can make up. Bits such as Death Star Canteen have been widley parodied on the internet and with just couse. His impressions of God (as James Mason) often occur throughout the six shows and it never gets old. His talent with languages is not something you see in your average comedian and extras on the disks rove this with a french spoken stand up set. Its a must have for people who want to laugh. ...

DVD Description
This award-winning performance, recorded in San Francisco in 1998, continues Eddie Izzard's comedic observations on everything from the history of Western culture to sex, filtered through his razor-sharp wit and lightning-quick chain of associations. And he looks smashing in a dress.
