Portrait Of A Serial Killer: But Not A Pretty One!
Review of Ed Gein DVD by sghawken

Advantages: A great performance by Carrie Snodgress
Disadvantages: Dated, a bit dull and far too much sumising

...I began watching the movie Ed Gein, Ed Gein is a true life character whose exploits are said to have inspired movies The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Silence Of The lambs. I never saw the end of Ed Gein, but a recent documentary on Channel 4 inspired me to dig out my old DVD to have a proper look. The documentary I had seen featured a large amount of newsreel footage showing people in the small town being amazed that Ed Gein had turned out to be ...
...residents of the town thought Ed to be more than a little odd. This is all made apparent within 10 minutes of the movie starting. I have done no research on Ed Gein the character, but obviously this is quite a confusing situation for someone to be in. Putting the documentary aside and pushing on with the movie, as the feature starts it again features real footage of townsfolk saying they were surprised by the actions of Ed Gein. This is obviously ... Read review

F00king hell, one hell of a movie!
Review of Ed Gein DVD by LisaUK11

Advantages: Being scared sh*tless.
Disadvantages: Disturbing scenes, literally make you sick.

...and very frightening movie called Ed Gein is a true story. Any horror movie based on a true story is terrifying but I promise you unless you have seen this you haven't been scared senseless! Edward Theodore (Ed Gein) was born on August 27th 1906. I guess the real motive for his insanity was his mother Augusta. Augusta was highly religious and had rather strange views e.g she was disgusted by sex and taught her boys never to be lured into womens traps ...
...after a series of strokes. Ed was traumatised as he had lost his only love and best friend. Ed Gein's main hobbies were to visit the graveyard at night *cough* freak! After his mothers death was the time Ed started to become insane. He would read death-cult magazines and even though he denied it police now think he was having sexual encounters with dead women. Plot outline: - Ed Gein reguarly exhumed bodies. What he did with these bodies was beyond ... Read review

Looney Tunes version of Psycho would be cool
Review of Psycho (Special Edition) by  Phelthew

Advantages: Great film. Directing. Classic
Disadvantages: Annoying cowboy only in for 3mins thankfully

...leaves you with snippets of information and lets you mull over what he could mean. For instance at one point he points to a picture and says "This picture is of very great importance" stares at the camera and moves on. This is a trailer technique I believe Hitchcock used more than once. Much better than a the typical dramatic voice spouting lies about how terrifying some crap film is with lots of flashes of people screaming and running. Then we have the production notes which were quite interesting. The film is based on a novel which is based on the true story of Ed Gein (There is an excellent documentary on Ed Gein with the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre DVD as it is also based on Ed Gein) Another interesting fact that I found here was that Hitchcock wanted it so that whenever the film started the doors were closed and no-one was allowed in... The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Review of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre DVD by  Phelthew

Advantages: Ed Gein Documentary DVD extra
Disadvantages: Only moderately scarry

...about a guuy called Ed Gein on it who was the real life inspiration for The Massacre and also for the story of Psyhco. The Guy was a real sicko, he lived with his mother till he was 40 then she died so he went mad and robbed the graves of women. Skinned tem and upholstered a chair with their skin amongst other gruesome tings. He even used the skin to make himself a body suit so he could pretend to be his mother. This documentary is actually quite scarry. It has photgraphs of the guys house and ugh etc. There is also another documentary about how they remade the film trying to the original story and stuff, this was less interesting and there were then a few trailers, and screenings of the actors for the part. Things I dont understand why people waste their time watching them. The film also ends nicely by returning to the crimescene walk... Read review

A remake that actually works!
Review of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre DVD by  johnsy32

Advantages: great horror movie, shocking
Disadvantages: none, well, maybe too scary for some!

...Features The Two-disk edition comes with a DVD completely packed full of special features, make sure to check out the Ed Gein documentary which was the true life inspiration behind the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, interesting and shocking! A whole disk dedicated to special features and top quality content too, the on location documentaries that film behind the scenes are brilliant as you get to know the cast a little better. Conclusions After seeing this advertised on television, magazines and newspapers I finally decided to go and buy this DVD which I thought would be a total disaster, remakes of original's usually are! But I was pleasantly surprised, this film has been done exceptionally well. The alterations to story lines have worked well, the overall feeling and mood of the film is eyrie and makes the shocks and macabre of this film extra... Read review
