Although perhaps not as shocking as it was at the time of its release Dennis Hopper’s consummate road movie about a youth culture at odds with the conservative adult world still hits the spot.
Hopper and Peter Fonda star as a pair of hippies, figures of loathing to middle America at the time, who embark on a journey by motorbike across the States hoping to discover both themselves and the ‘real’ world around them. Jack Nicholson in an early cameo role steals several scenes. They discover a lot, experience a lot; some of it good, some of it unquestionably not so good.
Honda’s character is the relaxed, more chilled of the two while Hopper gives an excellent, edgy performance. The soundtrack has not dated - ‘Born To Be Wild’ is still the highlight in the film’s clever use of music to both stir the emotions and build tension.
This film has all the ‘nasties’; sex, drugs and rock and roll, and if you disapprove of the depiction of any of these things it’s surely not for you. If you like action, action, action it’s surely not for you. If you’d like to see a film that was cutting edge in its time and whose quality still shines through then find it and watch it.
I’ve got the video, will almost certainly buy the remastered DVD, and have watched it many times. Easy Rider is a landmark in the history of cinema.
