EASTERN CONDORS is director Sammo Hung's high-energy version of THE DIRTY DOZEN. To win their freedom, a group of hardened Asian convicts agree to go on a suicidal mission to...
more...Vietnam and destroy an abandoned ammunitions dump before the Vietcong discovers it. Along the way, the men run into a trio of female freedom fighters and a freewheeling martial artist named Rat, played by Hung's Peking Opera "brother," Yuen Biao. The film borrows liberally from other Vietnam war movies (the Russian roulette scene from THE DEER HUNTER, for instance), but there are plenty of imaginative turns, including an instance when Hung uses leaves as deadly projectiles. As is typical in Hung's films, the action choreography is fluid and energetic. Hung's wife, Joyce Godenzi, plays one of the Cambodian guerrillas, Oscar-winner Haing S. Ngor (THE KILLING FIELDS) appears as a mentally deranged peasant, and Yuen Wah (Hung's and Biao's other stage brother) gives a quirky performance as the relentless commander of the Vietcong forces.

Based on the Dirty Dozen. This is Sammo Hung’s personal favourite film and probably his greatest achievement, in this his is actor and director. In fact the whole cast went through gruelling training to make this movie and it is said that Sammo Hung lost twenty pounds to shoot this movie and it shows. According to the cast in many of the fight scenes the actors are making full contact with each other.

The basic story is that a group of prisoners are given the chance to gain their freedom by fighting a rogue dictatorship in some area of Asia. The setting looks very much like Vietnam in the film. In true Dirty Dozen style the team is made up of a motley crew of likeable and nasty characters, including our hero Sammo Hung.

There is a good plot backed up by decent acting and some fast, clever martial art and gun sequences. While the plot may be fairly predictable in terms of who lives and who dies, there is enough here to keep you interested through the whole movie.

I should point out this movie is an 18 certificate and does contain a fair amount of gore and violence including some children playing Russian roulette with prisoners.

However this is a good all-action movie that will re-shape your opinion of Sammo Hung, especially if you have only seen him in Martial Law.
