Set in the early 1970s, EAST IS EAST, directed by Damien O'Donnell, follows the lives of a Pakistani-English family living in Northern England. George Khan (Om Puri), a proud...

George is determined to honor Pakistani tradition by arranging marriages for each of the children, whether they like it or not. When the Khan kids, including the nightclubbing Tariq (Jimi Mistry), the artsy Saleem (Chris Bisson), and the shy, parka-wearing Sajid (Jordan Routledge), begin to rebel against their forceful father, their mother also joins the household mutiny. During an awkward nuptial arrangement meeting with the snobby Shahs and their two unappealing daughters, the family's conflict hits its peak with surprising results.
With his first feature film, O'Donnell convincingly recreates the 1970s setting and carefully avoids glossing over the Khan family's difficulties. Puri and Bassett are excellent as the well-meaning parents, while Routledge is particularly charming as the reclusive youngest son. A quirky comedy that doesn't shy away from tense drama, EAST IS EAST is a truly unique film.

Set in the 70's, it's all about the Khan family, a half-Pakistani, half-English family, and their father's traditional Pakistani ways, and the childrens (and English wife) English ways.

It purposely touches a lot of the issues, and deals with things such as arranged marrages, multi-racial communities, and Anglo-Pakistani family life. Don't be put off though!

Comical moments are plentiful, but are interlaced with many serious but not heavy) passages. Most of the aforementioned issues are dealt with in the serious sections, while the comedy fits around this. This sounds awkward, but it keeps the film moving and fresh.

However, the issue of wife beating was raised, but not dealt with and this weakened the serious side of the film.

In my opinion the film is extremely well-acted, with overly comic acting kept to a minimum, and the lead, George (Mr. Kahn) is brilliantly done.

The film is fluid and smooth from one scene to the next, and shows British Pride as it was in days gone by, without being over the top.

This film was marketed as a black comedy - It is but also involves an awful lot of drama. This is a MUST see film - one everyone can enjoy.
