Advantages: Hilarious at times and the use of Chapters. Disadvantages: Rather upsetting at times, DVD jumped a little
...'East Is East' is a great comedy but you can expect to shed the odd tear or two if you have a soft heart. The plot is very up and down and can be hilarious at certain times, yet rather upsetting at other times. The Asian father wants all his sons and daughters to follow his Muslim beliefs, unfortunately for him they're all growing up and are
making their own decisions in life now. I found that the film can be very
tearful, especially towards the end, but is a real good laugh otherwise. I found the film suited someone who just wanted to have a night in with a mate laughing the night away. That's what I did! If you are down in the dumps this film may also help, but you must be prepared to cry if you're a
tearful person.
Overall the DVD film was brilliant-mainly because of the storyline and plot, but I also thought that the DVD...

Advantages: Wind up of every Asian Family everywhere! Disadvantages: none!
...I'm Asian myself so when i heard about East is East, i'd already missed it at the cinema so i bought the DVD.
I wasn't disappointed, i enjoyed this film thoroughly because it took the mickey out of Asian families and trying to combine east and west cultures. The characters remind you of various members of your family or extended family or their extended family!!.........and the way the film deals with issues such as violence, mixed raced children, sexuality, religion and culture does make you think of what it was like for many Asian families in the 60's.
Extras include deleted and alternative scene, interviews with the cast and there is a directors commentary too! Loads of bits and pieces!
Some of my family have seen it and they all laugh so i think it's meant to be funny and not offensive to Asians on the whole....

Advantages: new subject material Disadvantages: none
...I always wanted to see East is East at the cinema but never got around to it, so when it came out on DVD I jumped at the opportunity to see it. I thought at first that it was mainly an Asian film but as you watch it and the storyline comes out, you realise that it's more about families and what they go through rather than a specific ethnic group. What makes the film so good is that the family in question (the Khan's) are just like any other household. The film delves into the lives of George and Ella Khan who, together with their seven children, bring us the highs and lows of being in a family where views, opinions and decisions all differ and everyone takes sides against other members of the family... and who hasn't been in that situation? There are times when the characters really shine through and little Sajid, played by newcomer...

DVD Description
Set in the early 1970s, EAST IS EAST, directed by Damien O'Donnell, follows the lives of a Pakistani-English family living in Northern England. George Khan (Om Puri), a proud Pakistani immigrant, and his British wife, Ella (Linda Bassett), run a fish and chip shop, while raising their seven children. George is determined to honor Pakistani tradition by arranging marriages for each of the children, whether they like it or not. When the Khan kids, including the nightclubbing Tariq (Jimi Mistry), the artsy Saleem (Chris Bisson), and the shy, parka-wearing Sajid (Jordan Routledge), begin to rebel against their forceful father, their mother also joins the household mutiny. During an awkward nuptial arrangement meeting with the snobby Shahs and their two unappealing daughters, the family's conflict hits its peak with surprising results. With his first feature film, O'Donnell convincingly recreates the 1970s setting and carefully avoids glossing over the Khan family's difficulties. Puri and Bassett are excellent as the well-meaning parents, while Routledge is particularly charming as the reclusive youngest son. A quirky comedy that doesn't shy away from tense drama, EAST IS EAST is a truly unique film.
