DVD Description
This is a 4-Disc box set showcasing the best of Ealing comedy. WHISKY GALORE! tells the story of an island in the Hebrides called Todday. World War II hits the islands inhabitants hard when the local supply of whisky runs out! When a ship wrecks containing 50,000 cases of whisky the locals conspire against the home guard to get it back. THE MAGGIE tells the story of a tugboat skipper who tricks a wealthy American into entrusting him to ship valuable cargo. Once he realises what has happened the crew of The Maggie must outwit the American in order to keep the contract. CHAMPAGNE CHARLIE takes place in the gas-lit London of the 1860s, an aspiring singer gets his break when he changes his name to George Leybourne and sings drinking songs. IT ALWAYS RAINS ON A SUNDAY tells the story of a housewife, Rose, whose otherwise ordinary Sunday is changed when an ex-lover appears seeking protection, as he is now an escaped convict. As well as living with a husband and children, Rose also has to secretly protect the convict. Riveting Ealing drama.

The design.......
This dvd case is designed in black with the now famous four band members in their traditional 'Bohemian Rhapsody' pose. The four faces bearing no hint of a smile highlighted against a dark background.Above is the title designed in silver text which stands out nicely on the black background. The back cover has the song listings in white text and again on a black background.

...Looking for an original Christmas present for Dad? Granddad? Uncle Arthur? Maybe even Auntie Maureen? Then step into my office, for I have an idea. That's it, pull up a seat… just move the cat… help yourself to sherry and make yourself comfortable… I've got 3 feature length films to review here…
A few years ago (about 2003, perhaps?) I was looking for the DVD of "Passport to Pimlico". Back then it wasn't possible to buy the film individually and so I opted for this gift set of Ealing Comedies, featuring not only "Passport to Pimlico" but two films I had not, at that time, heard of, namely "Hue and Cry" and "The Titfield Thunderbolt". I am so glad that I did. I have been treated to an additional two features from the postwar period of the EalingStudios that I might never have come across otherwise, and some great bonus features...
