Ealing Studios Dissapointment

Advantages: Loveley Movies
Disadvantages: Bad quality, predictable selection of movies

Ealing studios have a history which spreads across over a hundred classic films enjoyed by individuals around the world. Several Box sets have been released over the years and this ' Definitive Collection' seems to contain yet again the same small selection of films favoured in previous collections. It would be nice to see a wider range of Ealings productions available, especially seeing as the Studios had and still have a massive fanbase for their work. The quality of the films themselves is terrible, and one would think that in the age of digital re mastering that something would have been done to touch up some of the more grainy and poor quality pictures in this collection. It would be wonderful to see a larger range of perhaps more diverse Ealing Studios Productions, or at least some remastered versions of these popular movies. ...

The Definitive Holmes and Watson

Advantages: Beautifully restored versions of the greatest Holmes and Watson of all time
Disadvantages: None a single one

The Definitive collection of arguably the best Holmes and Watson: Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce can only be greeted with joy, which is just how it was treated by me when it arrived in the post. Containing all fourteen films in the series that began in 1939 with The Hound of the Baskervilles and culminating with the rather melodramatically titled Dressed to Kill in 1946. For those not conversant with the Rathbone/Bruce Sherlock Holmes films, they began as almost A-movies for Twentieth Century Fox first in Hound and then The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. At this point Fox decided not to film any further adventures but Universal, ever desiring to put together B-movie series, which might draw in audiences, negotiated with Conan Doyle's estate to gain the rights. Successfully so, they brought back Rathbone, as an angular, slightly ...

The Hammer Collection Box Set

Advantages: An aesthetically pleasing collection
Disadvantages: Some rather poor inclusions

A selection of classic Hammer films from the very good to...not so good. An aesthetically pleasing set for fans of the studio, or those wanting at least half of the titles. Features star favourites Peter Cushing, Raquel Welch, Ursula Andress and Christopher Lee (about whom there is an interesting documentary with 'Scars of Dracula'). The extra features vary greatly, the biggest ommission, in my opinion, is the total absence of subtitles for the hearing impaired. For those who are interested all films are anamorphic, some for the first time, and completely uncut. My personal favourite was the inclusion of the 1965 film 'The Nanny' which stars a very chilling Bette Davis in a well scripted, and often overlooked role. Probably a tad overpriced for most, but new DVD versions of individual films are also available, so take ...
