Lily is sweet and timid, and although she appears somewhat ditzy, she is much wiser than anyone gives her credit for. Orphaned at a young age, Lily has always lived with her protective brother who is, in many ways, as ditzy as Lily - but looks are deceiving when it comes to this brother and sister duo.
Lily, who works at a burger joint, is secretly obsessed with one of the customers; however, he is secretly obsessed with Lily's co-worker. When Lily is given a final week's notice at her job, she finally manages to muster up the courage to speak to the man of her dreams, Jarrod, who, unfortunately for her, asks her to deliver an invitation to a party he is holding to her co-worker. Lily gives the invitation to her co-worker, but the young woman crumples it up in disgust and throws it away. Lily retrieves the invitation, and decides that she and her brother will attend.
At Jarrod's party, Lily catches his eye, and the two hit it off. After a bit of kissing, one thing leads to another and Lily and Jarrod soon become an item - until Lily accompanies Jarrod on a visit to his family, and their one week stay turns out to be more than Lily had bargained for. Although she had realized that Jarrod was somewhat - eccentric - nothing had prepared her for such a disjointed and whacky family!
'Eagle vs. Shark' possesses an extensive portfolio of whacky characters, more than I have ever witnessed in a single movie! Jarrod's family is comprised of a father who uses a wheelchair regardless that there's nothing wrong with him, a sister and brother-in-law who are extremely enterprising regardless that their ventures never seem to work, a daughter that Jarrod doesn't even seem to notice and an array of weird friends. Lily, on the other hand, has only her brother, which is just as well because Jarrod's family simply take over the movie. All of these characters are secondary; however, they are without a doubt the heart and soul of this movie.
This is probably one of the sweetest, quirkiest movies I have seen in a long time. Lily, who is as timid as a country mouse, is a bit on the naïve side, however, she is far from stupid. Her obsession with Jarrod - regardless that he is a liar and a cheat, a manic depressive with a chip on his shoulder and tends to be rude and aggressive - never wavers. Lily loves Jarrod as he is, faults and all, which is remarkable considering what an idiot he is at times!
Although Jarrod is not immediately likeable because his character is so complex and strange, it becomes obvious that his behaviour is borne of frustration. Jarrod had an older brother who committed suicide, a brother who was, to him, perfect. Regardless that Jarrod's father doted on his older brother, Jarrod was never envious of the attention his brother received because his brother was always there for him. After his brother's death, his father distanced himself even further from him, treating him as though he were a parasite, which led everyone else in the family to do the same. As far as Jarrod's father is concerned, Jarrod should have been the one to die - a sad thing for Jarrod, causing him to suffer from manic depression, and he tries so hard to please his father, which is why he returns to his home - in order to settle an old score that will, hopefully, win him his father's approval. Jarrod believes that the root of all his troubles is Eric, the school bully who used to humiliate him, therefore he thinks that if he confronts his enemy and wins the battle (which he has invited his entire family to witness), then his father will be proud of him and their relationship might improve. What Jarrod never realized was that his brother, regardless that his father doted on him, committed suicide because he could no longer live with the constant pressure of living up to his father's expectations. Jarrod is feeling that pressure himself, and unless something is done, he might follow in his brother's footsteps.
Lily, who is jilted by Jarrod soon after arriving at his family's home, is left stranded when she is unable to reach her brother in order to be picked up. She attempts to leave, but discovers that there is no bus service during the weekend. Depressed and saddened by the situation she is in, she keeps to herself and attempts to make herself as invisible as possible - however, she takes pity on Jarrod's young daughter who is ignored by everyone, and becomes friends with her - just as she becomes friends with Jarrod's father, who is, beneath it all, a man who is crippled by guilt (the wheelchair is symbolic). As Lily gets closer to Jarrod's family and is accepted within the tightly knit group, Jarrod, who jilted her in order to woo his brother's fiancé so that he might become more popular with his family, is somewhat distraught to realize that Lily has won his family over.
This is a strangely compelling movie that has as many twists and turns as a rollercoaster - however, as brilliant as it is, it is not for everyone. 'Eagle vs. Shark' is a slow-paced movie that is all about relationships and how they affect people's behaviours. It is a simple story with a complex subject.
The truth is, although the storyline is extremely simple, writing a review on it is probably the hardest thing I've done in a long time!
If you enjoyed 'Dirty Filthy Love' or even 'Forest Gump', two very sweet and naïve movies that highlighted the affects of relationships on people and the difficulties encountered in the name of love, then you will enjoy 'Eagle vs Shark'. If you disliked the two movies I mentioned, then this one isn't for you!
Advantages: Soundtrack, performances and originality Disadvantages: Its a little short
...together after all……Having realised that Eagle Vs Shark does to some extent follow this same pattern I assure you it raises the bar, the characters are far more interesting, the storyline far more original and soundtrack couldn’t be compiled by some teen flicking through her Now! Collection. The first refreshing thing to say about this film is it isn’t American, New Zealand were responsible for this one and it has a very different feel, small scale ... ...movie. It is based around 2 central characters, Lily and Jarrod, Lily is a shy socially inept but optimistic girl who is ridiculed by her work colleagues because of her personality and more than likely her looks. Living with her Brother she keeps an upbeat attitude by playing guitar, amusing herself with life’s amusing events. Jarrod is a strange awkward and obnoxious man immature for his years who works in a video game store who’s main aims in life ...

...trilogy doesn't count. Well the Eagle and the Shark is one you should see and very funny too. It's geeky in the that traditional Napoleon Dynamite sort of way, the laughs subtle and then not so subtle, a good giggle on offer at all those oddball characters from all the other movies in this genre you have seen. Lily: I have two things to say. One: I am leaving tomorrow on a bus. Two: that could change. -The Cast- Loren Horsley ... Lily Jemaine Clement ... ...for a small budget. The Eagle V the Shark is the real deal, cheap and cheerful and brilliantly written, Maori director Tankai Waititi as mad as a bag of snakes and that's allowed to come through in his baby. There are no belly laughs but you do smirk and giggle all the way through, silly clever observational humour the order of the day. As with Napoleon Dynamite, 'geek' is always funny when done well and this is no exception. I believe the cast are ...

Advantages: Some good gags and committed turns. Disadvantages: It meanders occasionally.
Lovelorn Lily spends her days working in dreary Wellington burger bar Meaty Boy, waiting to catch a glimpse of Jarrod, the man of her dreams when he comes in for his lunch. Gate-crashing his birthday party, the two misfits get together. But Jarrod reveals himself to be a petty egotist consumed with getting his own back on a schoolyard bully from his teenage years. Can love really conquer all?
Writer-director Taika Waititi has created an off-kilter ... ...a result of its socially retarded leading man and lady. It's easy to see why, as the movie is set in a dozy backwater where abnormality is the norm. The film looks as cheap as chips because Waititi is shooting hand-held on grainy film, but it kind of suits the retro aesthetic of the story. This is also true of the stop-motion animation that appears periodically, such as the creatures that open the film or the sleeping bag chase towards the end. It ...

...- Story - Eagle vs Shark is a movie set in New Zealand about a somewhat lonely orphan called Lily who has a crush on a guy called Jarrod who's just as socially awkward. It turns out that they share the most random things in common, which intrigues her, so she ends up staying at his families place and getting to know his family, while trying to take to or support his many peculiar hobbies, including taking part in video game battles and getting his ... ...as they once were. Its more a story of two quirky characters that try to see if they can make a relationship work. - Thoughts & Opinions - Although its not entirely the same, I did think that this movie reminded me quite alot of the movie Napoleon Dynamite. The characters in this movie are post high school age but personality wise, the characters are quite similar and the story is about giving an insight into what make these people tick, so to speak. ...

A comic delight destined for cult adoration (Empire, 29/11/2007)
DVD Description
Fans of cult hit NAPOLEON DYNAMITE will find much to like in this quirky New Zealand import. Director Taika Waititi's debut feature centres on the oddest of couples: Lily (Loren Horsley), an outcast at the fast food restaurant where she works, and Jarrod (Jermaine Clement, FLIGHT OF THE CONCORDS), a clerk at a video game store who is completely oblivious to his dork status. Lily's days revolve around Jarrod's daily burger-driven appearances at her job, but, alas, he only has eyes for her perky blonde coworker. But Lily wins his heart with her video game prowess, and the pair becomes a couple. However, Jarrod has more than romance on his mind, and he journeys back to his hometown to face a high school nemesis with loyal Lily in tow. Though Jarrod provides much of the film's humour, Lily provides its heart. Horsley's resume doesn't feature a large number of credits, but she is wonderful as Lily. She's awkward and honest, sweet and completely smitten with Jarrod. As Jarrod, Clement has perfected the deadpan delivery that made NAPOLEON DYNAMITE so much fun. As in its predecessor, EAGLE VS. SHARK features characters that aren't aware that they aren’t 'normal'. From Jarrod's mullets to his family's beloved track suits, they’re a study in strange, but they are genuine and real people. Like other odd romances such as HAROLD AND MAUDE, this love seems unlikely, but good acting and smart writing make it work.
