Review: A wicked, tech-savvy Hollywood tale of betrayal and revenge (Entertainment Weekly, 26/07/2007)

DVD Description

In his directorial debut, award-winning playwright and screenwriter Craig Lucas (PRELUDE TO A KISS, THE SECRET LIVES OF DENTISTS) has adapted his play THE DYING GAUL into a gripping romantic thriller of love and deception. Set in Hollywood, THE DYING GAUL tells the story of Robert (Peter Sarsgaard), a bisexual screenwriter who is offered a large sum of money by a studio executive (Campbell Scott as Jeffrey) for his latest script -- as long as he changes one of the characters from a man to a woman so the movie will not be about a gay man dying of AIDS. At first Robert refuses to compromise his vision, but after being encouraged and harassed by both Jeffrey and Jeffrey's wife, Elaine (Patricia Clarkson), he accepts the deal. But as he attempts to alter his very personal script, he is haunted by visions of his dead boyfriend, Malcolm (Bill Camp); meanwhile, Jeffrey begins to show a sexual interest in him, and Elaine is also intrigued by the very serious writer -- enough so to start an anonymous relationship with him in an online gay chatroom. As secrets are revealed and worlds collide, Jeffrey, Elaine, and Robert are forced to face some hard truths that turn to thoughts of murder. Lucas's noirish tale is filled with intricate detail and pinpoint acting, expanding his stage production into a thoroughly satisfying and thought-provoking film that is reminiscent of such Hollywood classics as THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, THE PLAYER, and IN A LONELY PLACE.

Die Hard DVD
Review of Die Hard DVD by  linkmans

Advantages: Excellent movie
Disadvantages: quality sometimes not the best

...If you still haven`t seen this one that you should do it fast. I remember watching this movie when I was a small kid. I still like this movie so I decided to buy a DVD. It is very interesting to compare such movie with the action movies today. I think that this movie is far better than the newest Die Hard which came out in 2007. This is nice way to look back at the good Hollywood action movies. Bruce Willis (with hair!!!) in his early days. Sometimes looks a bit funny today. But anyway this is a classic movie. I think that everyone should see this one. The movie itself is a typical American action movie when a hero (this time Bruce Willis) rescues the world. A group of terrorists capture his wife as a hostage and he cames to rescue her killing the terrorists one after an other. I would recommend everyone to buy this DVD. This is one... Read review

die hard dvd is back with vengeance
Review of Die Hard 3 by  utero

Advantages: great ction film with great extras and a DTS track
Disadvantages: only R1 and only available in boxset

...For those who've read my previous dvd opinions you'll know that I'm a string supporter of multi-region players. Well once my advocation of Region One releases has been justified. America has just seen the release of a breand new box st that features all three Die Hard films with dvd treatments they deserve. Over in the UK we'll have to be content with a standard movie, featureless affair for now. A different studio also holds the rights in the UK so the chances of seeing this dvd in all it's glory are slim. But still that's enough of the boring stuff, lets get on to the meat. Die Hard 3 is a rare beast. With sequels the quality often fails to match the predecessors but this one actually manages to be better then the second film and punches itself close to the first. Bruce Willis returns as John McClane who's a bit more washed up... Read review
