desolateNebraskaand its tales of serial killers and used cars. On his first record in three years, Springsteen navigates barren deserts and Old West war fields for a dozen forlorn songs that co-star the artist and his acoustic guitar. Though he's always had a knack for carving out the hooks and melodies that make each journey memorable, this time around Springsteen relies on the lyrics to carry the tune-desperate tales of tragedy, heartbreak, and lust with a Latino twist, like the boxer coming home ("The Hitter"), a distressing border-crossing incident ("Matamoros Banks"), and the Nevada hooker with good intentions ("Reno," which led to the warning sticker Adult Imagery). With no E Street Band in the mix, the album is decorated with horns and strings and Springsteen's novel falsetto on two his best efforts: "Maria's Bed," where the narrator comes home to his woman after 40 nights on the road, and the fast-picking "All I'm Thinkin' About," where he has more than Carolina on his mind. A decade from now this will be an underrated record in the Springsteen chronicles. (Includes bonus live DVD).--Scott Holter

DVD Description
A group of posh Londoners, including a soap star called Julian, decide to take a trip to the country. All seems well until one of the party gets high on angel dust and cause trouble with the locals, and violence then ensues, particularly with a disturbing pig-farming family.
Advantages: Atmospheric 'horror' movie dominated by its hypnotic tone and suspense; makes beautiful use of the Namibian desert Disadvantages: Those looking for gore won't find it here
...I'm not sure when I first saw Dust Devil except that it comes under that category of late one night I ended up watching some film, I know not why, and was amazed. Such is Dust Devil. Then, yesterday, I saw the DVD, and heedless of price I bought it, knowing that it is practically a 'lost' film, though it was only originally released in 1992. I didn't want to get home, search the internet for the cheapest price, only to find it out of stock, out of stock.
The DVD is in fact a director's cut, or as the credits at the end note, the restored version. Miramax removed some portion of the film and I don't know what or why. There are deleted scenes on the DVD that you can understand the omission of. They don't feel right. Except, that is, for one scene regarding the ringing of telephones that links together several strands of the plot...

Advantages: Superb acting and beautiful cinematography Disadvantages: I didn't want the film to end!
..., The Householder, A Room With A View, The Deceivers, Howards End, Maurice and The Bostonians. 5 second trailers are shown for many of the productions.
Ismail Merchant then discusses several of these, saying how he felt about choosing people to play the various parts. He states how they had a budget of $2 million to make Heat and Dust and it was one of Merchant Ivory's most successful films. He also says how their films are "of the mind, heart and intelligence".
As DVD extras go, there weren't many, but what there were, were interesting to view.
WHERE TO BUY
You can pick up a copy of the DVD from SelectCheaper.com for £5.99 or from 101cd.com for £10.99, or even from sendit.com for £14.99. I'm pretty sure you can get it even cheaper on ebay if you hunt around. It's also available from amazon.co.uk from £11.99.

...is in fitting with the period and the atmosphere and features some interesting South American influenced sounds to incorporate the motif almost as a prelude to the location change.
I have recommended this film but with reservations. I have recommended it on the basis that the artistic direction merits a viewing. This is a film with little warmth and much starch - to be expected perhaps but it turned me off quickly.
