When Claire Stenwick (Julia Roberts) and Ray Koval's (Clive Owen) paths cross, they begin an intimate affair. Ex-CIA agent, Claire, comes up with a plan where the two of them can work together in making a huge $40 million. With Claire working for a corporate giant in New York who have recently announced a new product development, so valuable that it would cause their main competitor to sink, Ray (who used to work for MI6) takes up a job with the competitor. With one of them working on either side, and with the CEOs each desperately wanting the product, they come up with their own ingenious plan to get their hands on it first and, in doing so, make themselves a fortune.
The plot takes you on many twists and turns and clever tactics and if Claire and Ray can both get past the fact that each one is highly competitive and secretive, they may be able to start trusting each other while playing in this million dollar game.
The film jumps back and forth between various dates in the past and the present and I found it really confusing to keep up with where we were. Occasionally I found myself still thinking that it was the past when it was actually the present as the film didn't convey the jump back to the present well. Putting the whole story together and understanding how they worked out the plan was just made even more confusing by these constant jumps in time and I never knew quite where it was at.
Clive Owen, although looking very hunky in a suit and with a tan, played almost exactly the same character as he did in the recent film The International. He played the smart and deviant role well but I thought that it was actually a rather boring role that could have really been played by anyone. Julia Roberts looked great and played a similar character to that in her role in Ocean's 11 and 12 although I found there was something missing and her usual spark wasn't there. There wasn't really any chemistry between them and it lacked that oomph needed in films like this. For a crime and espionage film, you would have thought there would have been a bit of action, but nope, zilch. The most action was Julia Roberts running down 3 flights of stairs and then back up again.
As it was getting closer to the end of the film, I was thinking oh well you know what's going to happen here but it doesn't. There's a brilliant unexpected twist which makes a great finish.
The storyline was very good but I just think it could have been done in a simpler way and the characters could have been a bit more engaging.
If you liked The International and Ocean's 11/12 and that kind of thing, then I would recommend this film.

Advantages: Fun to watch, good chemistry between Owen and Roberts Disadvantages: Formulaic in parts and it would be nice to see Roberts in a different kind of role
