But can they ever really trust each other, and will their competitive streaks be the making or breaking of them?
This was a film I've been eager to see after all the adverts on TV a while back, and then I've seen it on the beginning ads of several DVDs I've rented lately too. I love Julia Roberts as an actress and Clive Owen is growing on me too so this seemed like an ideal watch. My fiance and I sat down with my parents to watch it on the last day of our visit to theirs so we hoped to enjoy it, and I think for the most part they did, but I was left a tad confused and completely underwhelmed by this poor, disappointing movie!
The film begins introducing us to the characters of Ray and Claire and a bit of their background. All seemed pretty straightforward at this point, but then things started to get a bit peculiar for me. It then proceeded to jump forwards and backwards in time, repeating sequences over and over with no explanation, trying to create this "interesting" story of deception, lies and also a little love as well. Now, I'm not a thick person but I was just flummoxed most of the time with what was going on, my fiance having to whisper in my ear every 5 minutes what was happening and I think it was poorly constructed in this manner.
The acting isn't really anything to sing home about either. Roberts has obviously done some amazing films in the past, but this is not going to be anywhere near up there with the greats. She is fairly bland in this movie and doesn't seem to put much passion into the character of Claire, and consequently I didn't care much for her either way to be honest which was a shame. I also felt the chemistry between her and Owen was seriously lacking, and I found the relationship a little too false to be believable. The only part where I felt the two actors were any good was the surprising ending! The performance I did enjoy was that of the brilliant Paul Giamatti as company boss Richard Garsik - a very funny and fantastic performance and really puts the rest to shame.
Action scenes in the film were unfortunately pretty few and far between. There was one very good scene that was tense and created a good atmosphere and the final few scenes were good too, but other than that there was nothing to really write home about throughout the movie. It just seemed the whole movie had a very lacklustre feel about it and it seemed to plod along without really shocking or getting the audience excited about this heist that is going to happen. I think the constant chopping and changing of the period of time the film focusses on doesn't help with that, and I just think it seemed very confused. One thing I liked was the changing of location as it kept it fresh and gave viewers something nice to look at but it's only a minor positive really!
It's a shame that such good actors have made such a hash of what could have been a great movie. I feel that the idea of the plot is a good one, and really could have worked if it had been done in a different way. I didn't like how it flicked back and forth between Ray and Claire's relationship as it wasn't always clear to me what was going on and when the action on screen took place in relation to the current storyline of the heist, and the whole thing left me cold really. As I said, there were a few scenes here and there which were good but they weren't even to save this mess from becoming a disaster. The adverts for this make it look fun and a great watch, but they've clearly just shown the few good bits to entice the viewers which I think is a real shame. I wouldn't waste your time watching this, and if you must, I'd advise waiting until its on telly and won't cost you anything! Disappointing.

...was very interested to watch Duplicity which was one of the DVDs that I received for Christmas. I had not seen the film before but it looked promising as it starred Julia Roberts and Clive Owen and having now watched it, I was not disappointed. Either you think that the ‘heisters’ are going ... ...way round it is in Duplicity but I don’t think that you will be disappointed! When Claire Stenwick (Julia Roberts) and Ray Koval's (Clive Owen) paths cross, they begin an intimate affair. Ex-CIA agent, Claire, comes up with a plan where the two of them can work together in making a huge $40 million. Advantages: Funny, clever and intricate plot Disadvantages: Maybe a bit more convuletd than it needed to be
Duplicity is a romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen with an intricate plot and lots of twists and turns, nevertheless I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I've heard quite a few negative reviews recently, admittedly I don't think Julia Roberts was at her best however the storyline, which kept me guessing all the way through, and Clive Owen definitely made up for any other weaknesses in the movie. The story line is a comical thriller, ... ...two ex-spies. Throughout the film, the bond between the two characters is questionable. It is clear that neither is able to trust the other completely, this mistrust is accentuated by the complicated con they are embroiled in. The ultimate goal of the con is to make their fortune and live happily ever after, however how can they be sure that the other one can be trusted? The web of lies and deceit they weave leads to a complex and elaborate storyline ...

...intrigue, it was just perfect. Duplicity however tries to recreate this winner however you must remember how terrible oceans 12 and 13 were. Basically my point is that this movie in my opinion was terrible. The movie was too clever for its own good. Duplicity was a big budget ... ...movie does give a sense of reality with a plotline of corporate greed and theft and as for every hollywood blockbuster movie the formula for this movie is simply morality and success are functions of beauty

Advantages: It's a slick Hollywood espionage thriller... Disadvantages: It's less than the sum of its parts.
for the espionage itself and many individual motifs for specific characters or scenarios, so the sound-scapes feel rather busy, but overall the music fits the film and its sense of fun.
?Duplicity? is a frothy confection that plays out like a spy-cum-date movie. The direction is smart and sprightly, almost covering up the fact that there is hardly any plot with its tricksy plotting and relentless pace. The central scheme is nicely knotty and the main characters are likeable enough. The performances are slick and starry and the actors are obviously enjoying their work. However, enjoyable as it may be, it is less than the sum of its parts because once you get past all the rug-pulling there?s nothing much underneath. So while it may make you smile the first time round, it won?t be massively re-watchable once the scam has been unravelled. I?d give it a go ...

Advantages: Fun to watch, good chemistry between Owen and Roberts Disadvantages: Formulaic in parts and it would be nice to see Roberts in a different kind of role
Although it's good to see Julia Roberts back, doing something other than an 'Oceans' film, it's not much of a departure really in roles, and she's in danger of being type-cast. Having said that she does do it well and although she has seen better days, it's still great to see her on screen. The film has also gone some way to restoring my faith in Clive Owen. Also will he ever stop looking good in a suit? I think suits were invented, and have evolved over the years, specifically so that Clive Owen can wear them in movies and look that good. It's frustrating. From a males point of view. Anyway, I digress. I thought Duplicity was a smart, funny film, thoroughly enjoyable if taken in your stride. ...

Advantages: Well it's Al Pacino Disadvantages: but not his best film
good points - a nice twist to the ending and especially the delectable Ellen Barkin who has some seriously smouldering screen presence to her role as a maneater - this is by and large Al getting ready to put on slippers and nightgown as he settles into a role he would duplicate many times over in the 90's and beyond, that of the world-weary cop with issues.
I got this DVD for exactly five hundred pence from HMV. You, dear reader, can purchase same online but don't break the bank for it. Pacino plays this role better in that acting masterclass with De Niro and Kilmer that we know as Heat.
The song featured in the film is Sea Of Love itself, an old hit by vocal group The Twilights, covered in the 1980's by erstwhile Led Zep cohorts Robert Plant and Jimmy Page on their 1984 "Honeydrippers" set. I'm sure you will all ...
