Most serious gamers are in their teens or older, but the Dungeons and Dragons film has been pitched at children , and judging by the reactions of youngsters in the cinema when I went, they like it a lot.
I have been playing AD&D for some time, but held out few hopes that the film would be aimed at an adult audience. The plot is obvious, the characters 2d at best, the dialogue minimal, and the story line underdeveloped. (Two thieves, a trainee mage, a totally pointless dwarf and an elf do some dungeon crawling to get some items to start a dragon war to save an empire.)
The good points - Richard O'Brian, who is fab in everything. Tom Baker making a brief appearance as an elf. The effects, which weren't bad, and the moments of humour which I enjoyed no end.
It wants to be Star Wars oh so much, and for anyone familiar with AD&D you can spend a lot of the film playing spot the mechanics, which perhaps isn't ideal.
If you have a small child, take them to see this film, because it's a classic fight between good and evil with some dragons and some magic, and no doubt they will really enjoy it. If you are a mature player, you could go as I did, and laugh with a sense of irony and superiority. If you want classic epic fantasy and cinematic genius, you would probably do as well to wait patiently for the Lord of the Rings.
