As a fantasy film I have got to say that Dungeons and Dragons is very well made, has a good storyline and the special effects are brilliant. I didn’t really know what to expect before seeing this film, I guess it’s like an adult version of Neverending Story.
I have to say that there are a great deal more dungeons than there are dragons. The dragon fighting scene at the end is good though.
The story is about a dragon sword thingy that they have to find for some reason. It revolves around three people really, two thieves and a mage. There is a ginger haired bloke who sort of follows them but he doesn’t really say a lot or have much to do in the film. A surprise appearance was made by Richard O Brian, who was great. He had that camp humour as he normally does. The mage didn’t do many spells either, I thought that they were supposed to be doing fireballs/lightening etc. but she was just learning!! Not like playing the game on my old Spectrum anyway!
At times I would say that the film is very ‘Shakespear’, especially when Jeremy Irons is doing his speeches. I didn’t actually know he was a Shakespearean actor until someone told me so I think I did quite well picking that out!!
The effects in the film are very good, especially the first scene when the dragon is killed and the last scene where they are all fighting. The acting, can’t fault it. Marlon Wayans, the bloke from Scary Movie was is it (the wassssssuppp bloke???) and he was hilarious. He played sort of a girlie/wimp thief, my favourite character and added a bit of comedy to the film.
Didn’t notice a particularly good soundtrack but you don’t really get your up-to-the minute songs in a fantasy do you? Wouldn’t sound right.
I would recommend watching this film but if you don’t like fantasy films it’s probably not for you.
