I've only just recently seen this film, and from the start i didn't know what to expectfrom it. I've played the original games and others alike but still that didn't tell me what to expect from it. Although many people think that it may be based on the game, that isn't what you should have in mind at all. D&D (Dungeons and dragons) isn't a story, it was just a name given to an RPG game to make it sound more of a fantasy game rather than really about dungeons and dragons. Anyway, back to film...
Overall i thought it wasn't a bad film, the plot wasn't actually a good one in the end, and i found it amusing in many areas. Like i said earlier, there wasn't a story that this film could've been based upon, and so the producers must've have created the plot to go with the title, there were dragons, and also a bit of dungeons involved.
I was actually quite surprised by this film because although they sused mages, i thought they might've included more fights between mages than people. But i was wrong, they actually kept the use of magic and spells to a minimum and was more of an adventure than fantasy. The fact that it had included many of the races of creatures in many fantasy books like elves, dwarves, goblins etc... made it look like it was in a fantasy world.
One other thing, if you'd sit and think about it, in many books that i have read, thieves tend to be different and not brave like a warrior, thieves snoop around and is good at stealth. But the main character who is supposedly a thief was pretty much a warrior than a thief. I can stretch for theives to use a knife but not a sword.
The best part of the film i would think everyone agrees to me is the ending where the war begins between Savina and Profion. The dragons were very good and the fight between the red and the gold dragons looked very real.
The part i found most disappointing was when Ridley goes to find the Rod of Saville. There wasn't much in terms of danger in finding and retrieving the rod. The start of that scene was good when there was an unknown barrier to stop those who aren't destined to be in to the cave. I expected several fights and lots of traps, but i think they must've cut them out....it was pretty easy in the end for Ridley to retrieve the rod. And oh, the typical stupidness where the good guys believe in the word of the bad guys. Where Marina was held hostage by Damodar, Ridley hands over the rod in exchange for Marina, but he gets nothing back...(TYPICAL).
Anyway, the film wasn't too great, but it had its moments. I recommend those who are in to dragons and socery to watch the film but apart from that don't.
