What an appauling effort. I have never seen a film fail on almost every point. Granted, the special effects are great and the dragon battle is worthy of watching. But I went into the film with high expectations ( because the old cartoon series was one of my favourite programmes when I was little) and was not so much disappointed as mortified. Trust me if you are thinking of going to see this film then don't bother.
The story is not very well explained by the script but it seems to involve a quest to find a sceptre that can control a certain type of dragon. Two thieves somewhat stumble into this plot and accompany a young female magician in this dangerous quest that they have no concept of. This is echoed when a barbarian dwarf also joins the crew. though it is very difficult to understand how he got involved as the script gives the poor chap nothing to do for almost the entire film.
Then up steps Jeremy Irons, perhaps he can save this dire film. No, unfortunately he succeeds in making it worse. His acting was verging on pantomime villainy at times and whether it was his fault or the directors' fault is anyone's guess. The problem was that not one of the cast gave a good performance though Richard O'Brien and Tom Baker, who had very minor roles, at least tried to make an impact.
Then comes the absolutely blatant rip-off of "Star wars" episode 1. We have the 13 year old leader of the empire and even a light-sabre type fight at the end between the evil warlord and the gallant young hero. It was obvious to everyone where those ideas came from. All in all it is a very poor sci-fi fantasy film that must have had a lot of potential before the script team and the cast got near it.
Basically, good effects but a lousy script and a cast that ought to be ashamed of their performances. Avoid like the plague.
