This has got to have been one of the greatest animated series ever made back in the 1980s. A group of kids transported to a fantastical world resembling something written by Tolkien and having to go on a journey to find a means to return home? It must sound corny by todays standards but when it was first made, Dungeons and Dragons was nothing short of revolutionary, with kids having their own magical weapons and being on fantastical adventures of epic proportions, who in any decade wouldn't want that?. Suddenly kids were treated to something on TV which exemplified what they dreamed of. It may not have literally transported them to another world but it did fuel their imaginations and made Saturday TV a joy to watch.
In terms of animation quality Dungeons and Dragons may appear dated by todays standards. Absent are the visual effects taken for granted in todays world of animation,. However it is by no means crude and would have(and probably has) easily won half a dozen awards for animation excellence.
However no good story is complete without a cast of well fleshed out characters which really make it shine. Eacc character has his/her own personality, from Hank's unshakeable sense of moral justice to Eric's cowardly and arrogant personality. Not to mention the genuinely evil and imposing vlillains, above all Venger who sits alongside the plethora of villains who make film and TV great.
The boxed set itself comes in a sturdy card box adorned with Dungeons and Dragons artwork, enclosing 4 volumes. The discs themselves have few special features, the usual audio and episode selections are there. However that shouldn't put anyone off as it's all quite well presented and the quality of the animation and sound, improved from the original, is more than enough to please fans and newcomers.
So there you have it, brief summary of one of the most memorable animated series ever to grace TV, no story spoilers, if you want to know you'll have to watch it to find out. To those who watched Dungeons and Dragons back in the 80s, no there is no final episode, trust me as I regretfully say it was never made. However whether you're a fan or a newcomer I recommend this wholeheartedly.
