Whats this film got? Its got the lot! Well, it may lack a bit on comedy but so does Pee Wee Herman!!*! It has got, a hero - Paul Atreides, a villian - The Baron Harkonnen, some great scenery (admittedly its mostly sand after the first half hour), a story - good against evil, love, treachery, overcoming oppression, religion and war,- and a cast of actors of great stature.
In my opinion, only David Lynch could have bought Frank Herberts sci fi drama to the big screen, the many facets of the story and the sleight of hand with which they are brought together needed someone unafraid to tell the story as it was written and let the viewer make head or tail of it. Lynch is not afraid of the audience being confused but can still embroider a silk handkerchef out of yarn.
DUNE (Arrakis) home of the worm and the Fremen its indiginous race, the only place in the universe which produces the spice Melange a narcotic drug used in the process of space flight. Dunes history tells of the coming of a messiah, a saviour of the planet and of the people. Ruled by the bad guys, The Harkonnens, Dune is changed by the coming of the good guys, the Atreides, but foul play is afoot and the age old battle begins.
There is a lot more to the story than this brief summary but if I went into depth I would end up writing a parody of the novel and not an opinion. It is science fiction at its best but with a storyline taken from any good thriller or bible.
The acting is of a standard you would expect from such stalwarts as Patrick Stewart, Francesca Annis, Jose Ferrer, Dean Stockwell and David Lynchs' favourite Kyle Maclaughlin, plus a great performance by Sting as Feyd a psychopathic nutter.
Music is by Toto with a theme by Brian Eno, and Dino De Laurentis did not hold back when funding the special effects. Bearing in mind the film was made in the eighties the effects are good for that time, and being 2 hours long the film has plenty of opportunity to use them, but it is'nt just about space and sci fi, follow the story and escape into a world 10,000 years into the future full of menace, grandeur and intrigue.
I have read the book and the ones that followed so I am a devotee (my Ciao name Caladan is the home planet of the Atreides) so I am trying to be as unbiased as I can, but I think it is a great film and everybody should see it..........
