Ok, I have just read a couple of the opinion already written about Dune and the general opinion is to read the book first otherwise it is too confusing. I would agree with this, if you haven't read the book it would take longer for you to get into the film (if your not into books don't even bother trying to read it, it's way too long and there is three of them or something?). I would like to read the books at some point, but don't have that much time at the moment. However I picked up Dune on DVD a couple of months ago, it claims to have extra footage (about 40 mins), you might think "ooo big deal!" but the extra 40 mins does make the film more watchable (the extra footage explains the characters in more detail).
~~The Film~~ Okay, basically the film is all about "Spice", called Melange, this is a special spice, it powers everything in the Universe, allows Deep Space Travel, extends life, etc... (the usual Sci-Fi stuff). This can only be found on one planet, Dune (hence the film name). This spice is mined by one house (a planet), this contract is given out by the Emperor of the universe. Anyway the current miners, the Harkonen (an evil planet) want to kill the Atredies (sorry if the spelling is wrong). In order to do this they co-operate with the Emperor and give up Dune, when the Atredies arive they launch a surprise attack (help by some sabatours). Anyway the son of the leader of the Atredies survives and helps the Fremen (the natural people of Dune) to stop the spice harvesting.
I would go on, but this is a very long film and would take a lot of writting to explain. I believe the original film before it's edit to cinema was over 10 hours long! And I think for a long time this film had records for the largest set ever used and the most ever extras ever used in a film. The actual filming of the Dune took over five years and I also belive there were two more films in the pipeline, but these never got made.
Generally this film hasn't dated much at all, there are a few parts were it does show its age, but at the time these effects must have been pretty mind blowing. This film has a lot of now well known actors in it and some, well not actors. There is Kyle MacLaughlin (sorry again, not sure about spelling!), Patrick Stuart, Dean Stockwell, Sting (ouch! sorry couldn't resist that!) and many more. Each of the actors put in very good performances which makes the film a real treat to watch.
This is one of the classic Sci-Fi films which ranks up there with Star Wars, if not better than.

Nice op. But you missed the point that in the year 2001, they are still yet to break even. The release of the DVD is another attempt to recoup the losses. They are close to making a profit now though.
Advantages: Great film, great direction, great individual performances, gripping plot Disadvantages: Slightly dodgy lighting, plot not properly explained
