This film is utterly bizarre and nonsensical in every way. It it an effort to provide in one short miscast poorly written film, three full length complex novels that are only the first half of a series. The series, written by the author to explore the ethical dimensions of ignoring the evironmental needs of the earth to our peril and examining the possible results can not simply be reduced to a "good sci-fi flick". It requires an in depth look at the issues to be thoughtfully yet provocativley presented.
At the very least, it should be properly cast. There is a reason, when in the novel the lead character is presented as being a teenager.
It's effects were poorly executed and the screenplay was horrendous.
The soundtrack?
Give it a miss.

I disagree entirely with you on this :- ) especially as the film Dune was based on only one book, not three. You should try the mini-series which are better explained yet miss some of the points. I've always believed that Dune the film should have simply been split. Too much happens in one book for a 2hr film.
Advantages: Good effects, good storyline, good backdrops and locations Disadvantages: The storyline can be hard to follow and once you loose track, you will find it nearly impossible to get back on track
