Advantages: Interesting interpretation in places Disadvantages: Looks cheap in places; Those damn-silly hats!!
When Frank Herbert first wrote 'Dune' back in 1965, he couldn't have predicted the cult success it would achieve over the following decades. The book has seen many adaptations, from David Lynch's movie version, to numerous games for the PC and consoles. It also spawned several other novels.
Set ten thousand years into humanity's future, in a universe of plots, intrigue, betrayals and destiny. Crucial to the running, ruling and survival of 'The Known ... ...the inhospitable planet known as Arrakis. It is here that our hero, Paul Atreides and his family are betrayed by their archenemy, The Harkonnen. Left to die in the desert, Paul goes on to discover his destiny among the native's of Arakkis, who call the planet 'Dune'.

...highly recommend them especially to dune fans already. I am a huge dune fan and i think if you treat this as a film not as a word for word copy of the books you wont be disappointed.

Advantages: length, depth and breadth Disadvantages: feels cheap
Frank Herbert's Dune series is one of the most complicated, involving, detailed science fiction universes ever created. This is the second attempt to bring the original book to the screen the first being the much anticipated but sadly producer ruined David Lynch big screen version.
This version original made for television attempts to encapture the full scope of the book working within the limitations of an obviously tight budget. Trying to describe ... ...beyond my limited means suffice to say it deals with revenge, intrigue, double dealing and back stabbing set in a fully functioning and believable universe. Given the huge scale of the book the series makes a creditable attempt to potray the events depicted in the source material. There are a few omissions but these don't detract too substantially from the overall feel. The cast is okay, though sadly the actor chosen to potray Paul Atreides is not ...

DVD Description
A more thorough and straightforward adaptation of Frank Herbert's beloved sci-fi novel than the 1984 David Lynch version, this six-hour Sci Fi Channel miniseries, written and directed by John Harrison, follows the Atreides family's adventures on the desert planet Arrakis. Far into the future, various factions fight for the valuable melange spice that exists exclusively on Arrakis and is protected by fierce, gigantic sandworms. While the indigenous, blue-eyed Arrakisians wait for their Messiah to free them from the corrupt Harkonnens, the family Atreides endures infighting and political intrigue. This sprawling and reverent production features a cast that includes William Hurt, Giancarlo Giannini, Alec Newman, Julie Cox, and Matt Keeslar.

Professional reviews
Review: "...This incredibly ambitious [and] successful adaptation gives Herbert's work the kind of luxury only a six-hour miniseries can provide....Harrison does a fine job of keeping this often densely plotted and deeply philosophical story moving..." -- 3 out of 4 stars (USA Today, p.13E, 01/12/2000)
