If you like stupid humour this has got to be the greatest comedy ever made. Although you could argue that the humour is juvenile and occasionally predictable there is little doubt that everyone will find something they like in this film.

The story is about 2 guys Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carey) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels. Lloyd and Harry are best friends who live together and due to a mixture of bad luck and incredible stupidity are down on their luck after both being fired in the same day. Lloyd was a limo driver and after a gorgeous client called Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly) left a suitcase at the airport he retrieved it and decided to travel the 2000 miles to Aspen to give her the case back. Lloyd is totally unaware that the case contains ransom money for the release of Mary's husband and that the gangsters, Joe Mentalino (Mike Starr) and J.P. Shay (Karen Duffy) are chasing him and Harry thinking that they are professional hit men.

That is the basis of the story but really the story isn't important in this movie. The jokes keep coming thick and fast and although some of them are tired and should be retired there are still plenty of fresh ideas and laughs in abundance.

I should point out that this is the only film of Jim Carey's that I have not disliked. In all other films I have found him to be annoying and has been a distraction rather than a reason to watch. This movie is definitely the exception as he is excellent and appears to have found the ideal character to play. Jeff Daniels is his equal in every respect and could easily have stolen the show. Essentially they are playing the same type of character and they both add different facets to their own character and it is Harry who is the more likeable by the end of the movie. This is despite Lloyd being the primary character in that he is on screen for a lot longer.

Probably the film I would compare this to most is "There's Something About Mary". I suppose this is because they are both Farrelly Brothers' movies and have the same feel about them but I have found them both to be hugely enjoyable. If I had to choose I would probably say TSAM is a better film but it is a close call.

Dumb & Dumber is available in most shops in the budget DVD and video sections and for the reduced price I would say it is an essential purchase if you like this kind of humour. Although if you prefer your humour a bit more sophisticated then give this a wide berth. That is perhaps the best thing about the movie, from the name and the packaging you know exactly what you are getting.
