It was inevitable that THE DUKES OF HAZZARD would leap onto the big screen, and now, thanks to Broken Lizard's Jay Chandrasekhar (SUPER TROOPERS, CLUB DREAD), it finally has....
more...Slipping into the boots made famous by John Schneider and Tom Wopat, Seann William Scott and Johnny Knoxville play moonshine-selling cousins, Bo and Luke Duke. Along with their ridiculously gorgeous cousin Daisy (Jessica Simpson) and joke-telling Uncle Jessie (Willie Nelson), the Duke boys love to get the goat of Hazzard County's most crooked law enforcement officials, including Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane (M.C. Gainey) and county commissioner Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds). But when they discover that Boss Hogg is using his leverage to run them off their farm in order to turn Hazzard County into a strip mine for coal, things get personal. With the help of their faithful friends, Bo and Luke set off on their riskiest adventure yet. Showing his reverence for the classic 1980s show, Chandrasekhar incorporates freeze-frames, humorous narration, and extended action sequences, resulting in a crowd-pleasing romp that promises to introduce a whole new generation of fans to the Duke boys. While Scott, Knoxville, and the scantily clad Simpson deliver the goods, it is The General Lee the pair's electrifying orange Charger that steals the show.

With nothing to watch on the TV during the bloody football I have been picking up some bargain DVD's to pass the time. The Dukes of Hazzard is one of them.

THE FILM

The film starts with Bo and Luke driving around in their car, The General Lee, and being chased by cops. They eventually escape the cops but the car is wrecked. The cops are after the cousins as they are plotting to turn the town of Hazzard into a mine. The cousins stumble upon a building site when they crash their car and they decided they need to find out why it is there.

The General Lee finally makes it to the garage for repairs as Bo plans to race it in the big race a few days later where he is determined to beat the 4 times champion, Billy Pritchard, who has returned to race. The Mayor of Hazzard, Boss Hogg, played by Burt Reynolds, has bought and paid a great amount of money to bring Billy back to the race so he can get the whole town at the race track.

The Mayor has also set the Duke's family up by planting illegal goods on their property so he can seize their farm, the family later finds out that he has also seized other farms in the town. This adds to their suspicion of the building site and the machinery. The boys go to the building site to investigate and in the process steel the safe which they believe will have the evidence in they are looking for.

The General Lee is finally repaired and is looking immaculate so the boys use it to set off on their mission to find out what the Majors plans are and what the items are that they found in the safe.

Will the boys be able to find out the Major plans and will Daisy always be able to find out what she needs by flashing her cleavage? Will Hazzard be saved?

MY OPINION

I had to spend the first 10 minutes of the film listening to my husband moaning saying that the car was not the General Lee and looked nothing like it should so I was very relieved when it came out of the garage and was clean and shiny and how it should be.

The film was watchable but had a very basic plot. I do not remember the series so cannot compare the film and characters to it. The story only seemed to be used to show off car chases and the driving skills of Bo and Luke. Bo and Luke are quite tasty so this is an advantage for the women that have been subjected by their men to watch it.

The character of Daisy, played by Jessica Simpson was funny and she was able to wrap people around her little finger by flashing her cleavage, oh how weak men are!

The characters were all played well and the supporting characters also added to the film and some of them were very funny. The part of the Grandpa was good and he was great when he sang at the end, it was my hubby who informed me that apparently he is a famous singer in America (blame him if this is wrong!) Burt Reynolds also played his character very well.

I feel that the whole film would have benefited from a much stronger plot but it did pass an evening for me but I wont be rushing to watch it again.

EXTRAS

The DVD has several extras included:-

Additional Scenes
2 sets of Bloopers
The Hazards of Dukes ; Go behind the scenes
How to Launch a Muscle Car 175 Feet in 4 seconds
The General Lee Lives
Daisy Dukes: The Short Short Shorts
Jessica Simpson These Boots are Made for Walkin' Music Video
Trailer

I was not impressed enough with the film to find the enthusiasm to sit and watch these but they may appeal to some. If I do get round to watching them then I will update this review for you.

INFO

I picked this copy of the DVD up for 80p on eBay which I am pleased with as I don't think it is worth paying much more for.

The run time is 103 minutes which is more than enough to sit and watch a car being chased. The film has a 15 certificate which is suitable.

Produced by Bill Gerber and Directed by Jay Chandraskhar and it was released by Warner Brothers Pictures.

Not one I would recommend, maybe I will hunt out a DVD of the original series to see what all the fuss is about.
