constantly clowning around when he should be learning kung fu. After his comic antics injure the son of a powerful local man, his father enlists the help of his sadistic uncle to teach his son a little self-discipline. This strange man, who has a reputation for crippling his students, tries to teach Fei Hung a bizarre style of kung fu. At first, Fei Hung resists , but after losing a fight with a local assassin who has been hired to kill his father, he realizes he must master the special art of the Drunken Boxer.Drunken Master was the second collaboration between director Yuen Woo Ping (fight choreographer for The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Jackie Chan. Blending intricate martial arts moves with Jackie Chan's trademark slapstick comedy, Drunken Master ushered in the new genre of kung fu comedy and established Chan as its uncontested king.

Yuan sends his servant (Liu) to retrieve the princess and escort her to the coronation, but she is taken hostage by the revolutionary Yeung Kwan (Lau). With the Emperor's men hot on their trail, the revolutionary must use his kung-fu skills to prevent the coronation.

same ensemble cast and director Yuen Woo Ping), consolidated Jackie Chan's position asthe new Hong Kong kung fu action star of the late 1970s. Set in the late 19th century, Chan plays the great Chinese hero Wong Fei Hung as a loveable young rogue who is always getting into fights or embarrassing his family. Eventually his father decides the only way to make a man of Chan is to send him for training with an old drunken drifter played by Yuen Siu Tien. Just as they did inSnake in the Eagle's Shadow, the pair make a fine double-act, though this time there is much surreal entertainment to be had from the older man teaching the younger the fine art of drunken kung fu. Learning to fight like the Eight Drunken Gods before the final confrontation with Hwang Jang Lee causes Chan considerable problems, though Yuen Siu Tien simply fights better the more he drinks. Yuen Siu Tien would reprise the role in his final film,Magnificent Butcher(1979) yet with Chan he finds a perfect blend of slapstick comedy and creatively staged action which makesDrunken Mastera genuine kung fu classic. On the DVD:The picture is generally strong though inevitably there is a fair amount of grain. Unfortunately the original 2.35-1 film has been reformatted to 1.77-1 widescreen TV ratio. This has been done more skilfully than usual but is still a misrepresentation of the original cinema release and does mar both the landscape photography and the fast moving action scenes. The sound is perfectly acceptable mono. Soundtrack options are the original Mandarin with English subtitles, or an English dub. Extras include the original English language theatrical trailer, Hong Kong Legends' own trailer, plus promos for further releases and a photo gallery. There is a detailed text biography and filmography of Jackie Chan, a biography of Yuen Woo Ping and a text interview with producer Ng See Yuen. Also included is a text biography of Hwang Jang Lee linked to a kicking showcase which is another short fight scene. Most of these features are identical to those on theSnake in the Eagle's ShadowDVD. --Gary S Dalkin

Advantages: Culturally accurate (As I can tell), Comical, Excellent martial arts & Choreography. Disadvantages: Not too deep, more for action than story.

The choreography is outstanding and carries the film from start to finish. The story is of a young unruly martial arts student (Jackie) who is forced by his father to leave town to train with a legendary master (Begger Shu) who is said to be the toughest of all, feared by new apprentices'. The young Jackie later discovers the legend is all but an old drunk. He dismisses him, until later through a funny and riveting series of events their paths meet again. As the film continues, Jackie's character, Wong Fei-Hung, is taught 'drunken Kung Fu'. In the mean time it is revealed an assassin has been sent after Wongs' father.
I think it is plain to see that this is soley a martial arts movie; the story there perhaps to justify a comical and ingenious action sequence that occurs every few minutes. The musical score, costume and set design is brilliant and really throws you into the scenery surrounding you in the Chinese culture.
All in all a brilliant family comedy with excellent choreography and minimised action scene editing, allowing wonderfully flowing, full on scenes.
I would definitely recommend this to a martial arts film lover.
Advantages: The most technically perfect fight scenes I have ever seen. Disadvantages: Slightly tacky, although this comes with the genre.
of the Jackie Chan image.
All his co-stars (as with Sammo Hung on Martial Law) seem to have a script that demands disrespect and ridicule towards the Asian guy.
Obviously, Jackie must not mind this role, as he has done it several times already!
The DrunkenMaster is one of Jackie’s first starring roles in a major production. Before this film there had been a lot of bit parts and stunt work and even several starring roles in less expensive productions….Shaolin Chamber of Death for instance.
For this film though, Jackie was given the choreography duties which he would make sure no-one could rightfully take from him again.
The film centres on a young man who lives with and is trained by his grandfather to fight in several martial arts styles, the monkey, the crane, the tiger etc…
The mischievous Chan, however, is more intent ...
Advantages: Fantastic fight scenes, exciting and humorous performances Disadvantages: The dubbing is out of sync with the mouth movement
The adventure begins when Freddy (Jackie Chan) gets into a fight at the local market, as punishment he is sent to be disciplined by his uncle - a local martial legend and alcoholic known as beggar su who is feared for his 'Drunken boxing' technique. Freddy runs away from home, but inadvertantly accidently runs into his uncle during his escape and is then subjected to a year of gruelling practice and physical excercise. When the year finishes he returns home to find his father the target of a hitman known as thunderfoot (Hwang Jang Lee). He must then apply all he has learned to save both his own and his father's lives.
The film as a whole is quite linear and follows the basic Chinese tradition of protecting a father's honour. However, Jackie Chan's presence makes the film far more entertaining as he uses comical elements to bring ...
Advantages: Who would have though alcohol makes you stronger????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Disadvantages: Fight scenes too fast.........could even be an advantage???????!!!!!!!
Drunkenmaster....where do I start. This movie has everything from realistic and innovative fight scenes, to comedy at its finest. The thing which struck me the most about this movie was that there was an absolutely perfect balance between comedy and martial arts action.
Plot summary: "Jackie Chan plays a young man who's more interested in carousing and causing trouble than he is in learning martial arts. His father tries, unsuccessfully, to punish him and as a last resort calls in the movie's title character, the drunkenmaster Su."
Jackie Chan the greatest martial artist to emerge from China, has taken a fairly simple yet innovative plot and transformed it into one of the greatest martial arts movie ever!
Even those select few who dislike Jackie Chan.....will love this movie. ...
