together to cover the songs of an influential group, here we have a bunch of more or less well-known DJs (including members of Goldie's Metalheadz crew) remixing and reconstructing actual recorded works in their own image, namely with drum and bass (a.k.a. jungle) beats. In this case, the object of affection is Art of Noise, a clear forerunner to the current boom in sampled and spliced dance music. The Drum and Bass Collectionis the latest in a series of Art of Noise remix compilations, following 1990'sThe Ambient Collectionand 1991's more techno- and rave-oriented release,The Fon Mixes. Considering thatDrum and Bassis, thus, the third new Art of Noise record since the group disbanded eight years ago, perhaps the only tribute here is to the infinite possibilities for recycling old songs in this high-tech age. Then again, there's little here to suggest these tracks have anything to do with Art of Noise. For instance, in the hands of the London duo Flyright, Art of Noise's hit "Peter Gunn" (itself a drastic remake of the '50s television theme) loses all traces of the original's most distinguishing feature, Duane Eddy's twang guitar lead line. Similarly, Lightfoot's reworking of "Yebo," Art of Noise's 1989 collaboration with South African singing group Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens retains only two syllables of the original vocal part. The question, then, is: If the rhythms are altered and the melodies disappear, what makes this an Art of Noise record? The answer: nothing. But, then, in the strange world of techno, all matters of source material and songwriting are bound to remain fuzzy. Do yourself a favor: Keep all inquiries to yourself and just concentrate on those crazy beats.--Roni Sarig

Advantages: 2 hours of the liveliest rock performance ever captured on DVD + extras Disadvantages: None... well, I guess you'll need a DVD player.
...Incubus' 3rd (and best) DVDrelease "Alive at Red Rocks" is a journey through 19 of incubus' best songs, past and present, in a high-energy and spectacular performance.
If you are an incubus fan you will already own this DVD or at least have witnessed the event 1st hand. If you are just starting out, this is a great start to an Incubus collection because the track list spans so many albums.
Let me 1st talk about the DVD itself and the tracks it embraces. The DVD contains the 2 hour live show from the legendary performance on July the 26 (2004) at the Red Rocks amphitheatre. I've seen incubus live in Manchester before and I bought this DVD so that I could relive the experience. I was slightly disappointed that the DVD doesn't include "New Skin" and "Warning" but while the DVD was playing I forgot all about that!
This is the track...

Advantages: Perfect performances, funny in the right places, genuinely heartfelt effort. Disadvantages: Not for thos who prefer Eels the rock band
..., on with the review.
The tour previous to this one had been a dark, heavy and manic. Mark Everett decided it would be interesting to see what would happen if the traditional rock band layout was replaced with a string quartet, and then having different instruments placed around them. You will see in this DVD, the use of an auto harp, a double bass, piano, toy piano, melodica, slide guitar, a vibrator covered in tinfoil (I’m not joking either) and a drum kit composed of two bins and a suitcase. Everybody is very smartly dressed, and it all screams at you, from every conceivable angle, that this is designed to be a gentleman's evening and not a heavy metal concert.
This presents something of a watershed concept to be honest. For fans whose vocabulary is limited to the words "Dude", "Hardcore", "You sold out man!" and "Wooooooo!", this will go...
