Here, in Drop Zone, we see the art of skydiving from a competition aspect and also how it can be used for more sinister causes.
Snipes plays Pete Nessip, a US Marshall who loses his brother and the computer geek they were escorting to federal prison following an attempt on his life. Mourning the death of his brother, and determined to catch his killer and rescue the computer geek Leedy (Michael Jeter), Nessip infiltrates a group of skydivers to get closer to the villains, led by Ty Moncrief (Gary Busey). Moncrief has big plans involving Leedy, and plans to use skydiving to do the crime. Nessip must act quickly and without suspicion falling on him in order to prevent a catastrophic heist from taking place. And, of course, there's the revenge of his brother to think about.
This film is no Oscar winner, and is on a par with most of Snipes' films, if you're familiar with them. He ultimately plays the guy on the right side of the law who must expose the crooks and exact revenge for the death of a close one. This is a role Snipes is good at, and is reminiscent of Point Break, where Keanu Reeves's character infiltrates a surf gang to expose bank robbers, so it is not unfamiliar territory for us as viewers. Busey plays a good villain here, he has that wild-eyed look that convinces you he's up to no good and believes he's untouchable with it! Some of the cast do well, particularly Yancy Butler as a bit of eye candy for the guys, but the majority of the acting is nothing special.
There are some very impressive action sequences in the air, with a terrorist kidnapping beiong performed out of a 747, thousands of feet in the air. The filmwork on this is impressive, as is the filmwork on the rest of the action sequences throughout the film. The acting leaves a little to be desired from most parts, but is decent enough, with the main focus tending to be on the action and a 'poor man's Point Break' style plot. I did enjoy this aspect of it, and I liked the fact that there was little doubt as to who the criminals were. I found it made watching all the more easier, without having to worry about concentrating too much to work out what is going on.
This is the sort of film I would enjoy watching at home while doing something else - you don't need to concentrate too much, and it is typical of many 1990s action films in that if you miss part of it it doesn't really matter that much. I have watched this film a number of times now, and I haven't tired of it. It is harmless fun, nothing special, with a little disappointment in the acting stakes.
I'm going to give this film 3 stars as it is a very good film to just stick on to watch while you're doing something else, but it will also hold your attention if all you're doing is watching the film. Nothing like a cheesy action film to pass the time! The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.97 for a brand new copy, or under £4 for a used copy.
Advantages: Great acting, action and plenty of skydiving Disadvantages: None
Drop Zone is excellent. The aerial photography of people hurtling towards the ground at terminal velocity is superb. If you are remotely interested in skydiving then you wlli love this film. The plot is very good and entertaining and moves along at a fast pace so you never get bored. The acting is great too and Wesley Snipes does a good job of eventually blending in as a skydiver. The action is thick and fast with fights, explosions on planes and ...

If you like films that are truly exciting from start to finish then this is for you. It begins with sky diving terrorists hyjacking a plane, causing the death of a policeman - the brother of Wesley Snipes character. (Eagle eyed viewers will notice that the terrorist is played by the terrorist of 'Under siege'). From then on Wesley Snipes is determined to catch them, and so takes sky diving lessons. There are thrills galore to follow and some of the ...

...fights and plenty of humour. Drop Zone is a must see movie which, keeps you gripped to the very end. Wesley Snipes steals most of the film but it has a member-able cast also including John Badham and Gary Busey.
The film is about a group of terrorists that have staged a computer hackers death so they can use him to take part in money making downloads. It is another terrorist feature, but I think this one is different and there is a lot of enjoyment ...

In order to learn more about the world of skydiving, Nessip joins a championship skydiving school in Florida, run by Jessie Crossman (Yancy Butler) who informs him of a legendary jump on Washington, D.C. on July 4th, which is rumored to be the one time, every year, where security is lessened over the capitol's air space. Director John Badham's action thriller features harrowing skydiving action sequences.
