A chaotic comic fantasy about Elizabeth, an ineffectual young woman (Phoebe Cates) who leaves her unfaithful husband and returns home only to be oppressed by her overbearing...
more...mother. She comes across one of her childhood toys, a Jack-in-the-box, in which her frustrated mother imprisoned Elizabeth's childhood "imaginary" friend Fred, many years ago. Low and behold she opens the box once more, and out springs Fred with 21 years of pranks stored up! The mischievous Fred enters Elizabeth's life like a whirlwind, shaking her out of her passivity with his outrageous antics. Egged on by her manic little sidekick and his hilarious escapades, a revitalised Elizabeth embarks on a campaign to win back her errant husband. Rik Mayall is perfectly mischievous and off-the-wall as the chaos-creating pal in this impish tale.

****** Drop Dead Fred ******

Drop Dead Fred is a must for my collection, I just love the movie. Directed by Ate de Jong in 1991. Even thinking about it makes me have a cheeky smirk on my face every time. This movie is childish yet witty and very comical; Rik Mayall, a favourite actor of mine, plays one of the funniest roles ever. They have picked the perfect cast as they all fit and work well together, Rik was just the icing on the cake. Rik Mayall stars as Drop Dead Fred a witty, cheeky, mischievous and very naughty man. With his bright green clothes and flamed red hair, you can not help but to laugh. What I also like about this movie is that it's not predictable you never know what plans Fred has next. I would love to see Rik Mayall in more roles like this as he adapts to the parts so well. Elizabeth (Phoebe Cates) stars as the partner in crime, until she starts to get older that is, I was told once by my friend that I remind them of the little girl. (is that good or bad hehe) This movie is an all round well produced film which is great anytime of the year.

****** The Plot ******

Elizabeth (Phoebe Cates) is having one of the worst days of her life. She is on the phone to her friend having just found out her husband is leaving her for another women, when her car and handbag get stolen. Due to this, Elizabeth is late for work, where her boss sacks her for her lateness. Poor Elizabeth is now down in the dumps so her mother makes her move back in with her. As she is looking through all of her old things she finds an old jack in the box, then her memories starts coming back from her mischievous childhood. Elizabeth puts the box by her window and goes off to bed, during the night she hears some music then POP Drop Dead Fred jumps out wilder than ever.

Elizabeth is now on a mission to try and get her husband Charles (Tim Matheson) back while trying to control Drop Dead Fred. Fred's favourite word for Elizabeth is snot face, heard many times during the movie, which made me giggle. Fred knowing that Elizabeth's husband is no good, tries to get her away from him by playing up and being even naughtier, hoping Elizabeth will cheer up and move on.

As things are not going so well for Elizabeth, her mum Polly Cronin (Marsha Mason) makes her go back to the doctors where he gives her some pill's in the hope that it will get rid of Fred. Elizabeth has now got to stand up to her mother and husband, will she or wont she?
.
****** Soundtrack ******

There isn't really much of a soundtrack to this movie, but you soon learn when the mischievous parts are coming up by the same cheeky tune.

****** Special Features ******

Unfortunately there are none, which I really miss. It would have been great to watch some deleted scenes and out-takes. This really lets the DVD down.

****** Running Time, Certificate and Region ******

Running time of approximately 1 hour and 26 minutes, certificate 12 but could have easily been 15 as its been down graded. Region 2 pal.

****** Value for Money ******

Though apart from not having special features this DVD is very good value for money normally around £4.99 - £7.99 I wouldn't pay no more than that though as there are no added extras.

****** Recommendations ******

I would certainly recommend this DVD to people that like there outrageous comedy and cheeky antics. Even my parents liked this movie.

Thanks for reading my review
