Drop Dead Fred is a light hearted comedy, released for television in 1991, but not available on video until 2000. This film runs for 94 minutes and stars Rik Mayall and Phoebe Cates.
Elizabeth (or Snot Face, played by Phoebe Cates) is a young Woman who works at the court and is married to Charles. When her husband leaves her for another woman, Elizabeth stays with her mother and suddenly Drop Dead Fred (Elizabeth's childhood imaginary friend) appears. After Fred causes chaos, which Elizabeth gets blamed for, her mother takes her to see a psychiatrist and she is prescribed tablets.
When Fred realises how un-happy Elizabeth is, he tells her to go to the wine gala that night because Charles will be there. So Elizabeth goes shopping and bumps into old classmate Micky Bunce and they go for lunch. When Fred causes chaos at the restaurant, they are thrown out.
When Elizabeth goes home, she is faced with a larger than life sized nurse, that her mother as employed to look after her. Elizabeth is then confined to her room and forced to take her tablets.
Just as the wine gala looks to be out of the question, Fred tells Elizabeth to break her window and climb out. But when Elizabeth smashes her window she finds Micky Bunce climbing the tree up to her, to give her the dress she had bought for the wine gala and had left in his van.
Charles is shocked with Elizabeth's new image and they go back to their marital home. But when Elizabeth serves mud pie for dinner, Charles forces her to take one of her tablets and storms out of the room. Charles then calls his girlfriend in the hope of getting back together, but Fred overhears the conversation and tells Elizabeth to listen.
After throwing Charles out, Elizabeth starts to feel funny and notices that Fred is disappearing. Elizabeth tells Fred she doesn't want to lose him, but it appears too late because her tablets are killing him. Fred tells Elizabeth to go with him and she floats into him and they disappear.
Elizabeth is now in Fred's world and she is faced with all her real life problems, Charles and her mother. Having faced up to them and the fact that she is okay on her own, Elizabeth wakes up with Fred gone forever out of her life.
Elizabeth then goes to see Charles and her Mother and very maturely tells them that she doesn't need them anymore, because she is able to look after herself.
Elizabeth and Micky Bunce then become an item and Micky's daughter from a previous marriage, seems to have taken new pocession of Drop Dead Fred.
A great film with laughs all the way! One of my favourites.
