Set in 1960s Detroit, DREAMGIRLS follows the commercial and cultural struggles of the R&B recording industry, through the rise of the Dreamettes (later shortened to just the...
more...Dreams) from backup singers to headlining international superstars. The trio--Deena (Beyonce Knowles), Effie (Jennifer Hudson), and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose)--soon discover the harsh reality behind the glamour of fame and fortune, as the group's controlling and shady manager, Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), uses them to help build his musical empire and capture his dream of crossing over from R&B to the pop charts. He sacrifices Effie's immense talent as lead singer for Deena's stunning, more mainstream look to sell the sound, pushing marketable appeal over musical artisanship--and compromising the ambitions of his proteges.

Since its Broadway debut, DREAMGIRLS has been widely rumoured to be inspired by the hugely successful girl-group the Supremes, as well as some of Motown's biggest players. Knowles's Deena portrays the Diana Ross character, radiant in miraculous recreations of the hairstyles and fashions that made Ross timeless, while Foxx's Taylor exemplifies influential Motown Records founder Berry Gordy Jr. Former AMERICAN IDOL contestant Jennifer Hudson makes her feature-film debut delivering a knockout performance as the larger-than-life Effie, and Eddie Murphy is believable as the misunderstood James Brown-like character of Jimmy "Thunder" Early. Vibrant with colourful costumes and sleek backdrops, the film flows effortlessly from dialogue to musical numbers, each song capturing the richness of the talented cast and the essence of the era, endlessly soaring with fast-paced excitement and non-stop emotion.

The star-studded cast of this film immediately sets the pulse racing....surely a film starring the beautiful Beyonce Knowles and the wonderful Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy couldn't prove flat and lifeless?? But somehow, this group of stars somehow conspire to produce a real dud.

This is of course a musical, and as such is subject to the usual formalities of musical film, such as the spontanious breaking out into song during conversations.

The basic plot of the film is of a group of young african-american women who get a lucky break and manage to launch a successful career, first as backing singers and then as a group in their own right. The fly in the ointment comes when the girls selected lead singer is shoved aside by their manager (Foxx) in favour of the more beautiful, but less vocally talented Deena (Knowles). Sound fmailiar? Well it's basically the story of Diana Ross and the Supremes. Minus one crucial ingrediant: the music of Diana Ross and the Supremes.

The film is based on the successful Broadway musical of the same name, but doesn't adapt to the big screen very successfully. The performance of American Idol loser Jennifer Hudson is one of the bright lights of the film, but the limited screenplay gives little for the other stars to work with. As the film bustles on, the viewer is not left wondering how proceedings will work out, but wondering how this film could have gone so badly wrong. Apart from Hudson, the characters are not likeable, and the weak characterisation associated with musical theatre is rife here.

If you are a fan of musical (as I am), have a look at this film, but don't expect too much. It is a lighthearted musical with adequate songs, nothing more than that. I look forward to seeing Foxx and Knowles in more challenging roles, where they can really show us what they;re capable of.
