Based on the novel by Stephen King, Lawrence Kasdan's DREAMCATCHER follows four friends who receive psychic powers as children when they aid and befriend a mentally retarded boy...
more...named Duddits. As adults, Jonesy (Damian Lewis), Henry (Thomas Jane), Beaver (Jason Lee), and Pete (Timothy Olyphant), reunite every winter at a cabin deep in the Maine woods to hunt, drink, and celebrate the bond they share with Duddits (Donnie Wahlberg) and each other. However, this year their wilderness reunion is marred by disturbing incidents which begin with the discovery of a lost, sick hunter and a frozen figure in the middle of a remote road. As events escalate and horrific creatures emerge from unsightly spaces, heavily armed government operatives, led by the imposing Colonel Curtis (Morgan Freeman), arrive in the area, and soon the situation becomes an all-out battle for the fate of humanity.
DREAMCATCHER features aspects of other King screen adaptations such as STAND BY ME, IT, and THE TOMMYKNOCKERS, along with films such as THE THING and SIGNS. Seemingly disparate elements that filter into this giddily strange story include creeping red mould, fatal bowel movements, deadly worms with needlelike teeth, an imaginary space called the "memory warehouse," a deranged military officer, and an ailing man obsessed with Scooby-Doo. Director/screenwriter Kasdan, along with veteran screenwriter William Goldman, revel in the absurdity of the tale, crafting an often chilling and sometimes funny film that delights in its own thoroughly entertaining outrageousness.

Dreamcatcher is about four friends (Beaver, Jonesy, Pete and Henry) who have special abilities such as telepathy and the ability to find stuff. They were given these powers when they were boys by Duddits, a mentally retarded child, as a reward for them helping him when he is being bullied.

The four guys go to a cabin to get away from the stresses of their lives. When out hunting they see a man who is ill and take him back to the cabin. Lots of farting, burping and general wind problems occur as the man gets more ill. It appears that all the animals in the woods are affected to as they have the same red marks on their bodies.

The illness ends up being caused by sh*t weasels. They are like slugs with more teeth and slightly scarier. They basically burst out of the persons backside leaving lots of blood and mess and begin trying to bite and kill the next people they see.

All this is down to Mr Gray, the alien. He wants to take over the world and intends to use Jonesy's supernatural abilities to help him fulfil his goal. Meanwhile, the army are aware of the aliens and have quarentined the area while they try and control the situation.

I won't ruin the ending or tell you anymore of the plot because to be honest it got a bit confusing from then on. There were some hilariously funny scenes after Mr Gray has taken over Jonesy's body. The only way to differentiate between the good Jonesy and the evil Mr Gray was the diabolical British accent (for the evil alien of course!) and I was laughing at the absurdity of the sh*t weasels for hours.

The acting is not great either. As well as that awful British accent, there were some cringe worthy moments as the four friends acted "scared". Morgan Freeman plays the colonel and I'm usually a big fan of his. However, his performance was mediocre. Jason Lee plays Beaver and is killed too soon (sorry if this ruins it!). Hadn't heard of any of the other actors in the film.

The special effects are quite good. Mr Gray looked a bit artificial but the sh*t weasels were as scary as slugs with teeth can be.

We rented this movie for a horror film night. I was extremely disappointed. It was not scary at all. There was lots of blood and gore and some pretty disgusting moments but not alot of horror. We laughed a lot but more at the film than with it. Not worth buying, possibly worth renting just to see how silly the film really is!
