What an American Beauty!
Advantages: FANTASTIC! Disadvantages: NONE!
American Beauty is a masterpiece in cinematic artistry! The basic premise tells of Lester Burnham -Kevin Spacey, whose having a mid-life crisis. Everything on the outside is a perfect picture of domestic bliss! His wife, Carolyn- Annette Bening, is a hardworking albeit materialistic Real Estate Agent. As Lester narrates the film, he describes his marriage as non existent and how it's all for show. As he slips deeper and deeper into depression he ... ...his daughter then forms a strange friendship with the boy next door, Ricky. As Lester continues drooling over Angela, Carolyn 'entertains herself with a work colleague' and their lives seem to fall even further apart. There are several sub-plots in the film, so it almost becomes an ensemble piece, but all the stories' intertwine wonderfully. The film was directed by British born, Sam Mendes. This was his first cinematic direction, and what a debut ...

An amazing true story
Advantages: Great acting, great portayal of a fascinating true story Disadvantages: There aren't any
Erin Brockovich is the incredible uplifting true story about a young mother with 3 young children who manages to win a legal damages of 6 million dollars for a small town when she discovers that the water pipes have been poisoned & have been making people seriously ill & even killing them. Erin Brockovich, played by Julia Roberts is arguably her best performance to date & with the exception of Pretty Woman is my favourite film of hers. She's fantastic ... ...from start to finish.
Erin has no qualifications, the only thing she has is that she won a beauty contest when she was younger. Ed gives Erin a job as his legal secretary after she wouldn't take no for an answer. Erin was in a minor car accident that wasn't her fault & Ed promises to win her compensation which he fails to do so as a form of compensation she demands a job so she can look after her 3 kids. At first people avoid her because of her ...

"I see dead people" - The Sixth Sense
Advantages: Great twisting plot...I thoroughly enjoyed it =) Disadvantages: None!!
...I See Dead People! - The Sixth Sense In my opinion, sad, sympathising and a little chilling are my words to describe this movie. The Sixth Sense (released in 1999) is about a 9 year old boy, Cole Sear, (played by Haley Joel Osment) who has an illness that no-one knows of. Dr. Malcom Crowe (played by Bruce Willis) on the other hand, is a child psychologist, who receives an award on the same night he is "visited" by an unhappy ex-patient. ... ...just so happens to have the same illness as the ex-patient. Will Malcom overcome his encounter with his ex-patient? Will little Cole be cured of his illness?? What is Cole's illness that seems so uncurable?
The great thing about this movie is that it is realistic. As an audience you might expect something to happen later on in the movie, but quite the opposite takes place. Suspense, twisting and touching are three words i can think of to describe ...

Breaking The Waves - Film Only
Advantages: Far better performances than the film deserves. Disadvantages: Let's see - sadistic, inhumane, dishonest, cowardly...
...and nasty Lars Von Trier, Breaking The Waves is, like his later Dancer In The Dark and Dogville, a cynical, misogynist melodrama that comes a hell of a lot closer to "Torture Porn" than anything Eli Roth has ever crafted. Emily Watson plays the childlike, mentally unstable Bess McNeil - the Holy Fool of the piece, pretty much - who, as a means of pleasing her recently paralysed husband Jan (Stellan Skarsgård), sets about prostituting herself to an ... ...far removed from Von Trier's. Breaking The Waves engages neither the soul nor the mind - it is an (admittedly well directed, for what its worth) insulting, offensive exercise in manipulation - a Sirkian melodrama shorn of heart or insight, loaded with bile and hatred in their stead. The performances, as is always the case in Von Trier's work, are wonderful throughout - far, far better than the film deserves. The handheld camerawork which would become ...

beautifully crafted, scripted and performed
Advantages: Cast, acting, script, story Disadvantages: Can't think of any
...add to a critique of Casablanca not already said, nor much more original to say in awe and devotion of this classic... But i'm going to say my two pence worth anyway! The plot in it's most basic terms: Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), runs a bar in Casablanca during World War II. People come to Rick's bar to buy letters of transit to escape to America. One day he is approached by Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid) who is well renowned as a rebel and his ... ...Rick's true love who left in Paris a number of years ago when the Nazi's invaded. Although devoted to her new husband a renewed love ignites between the two and they must make difficult decisions as to the course of the future. Humphrey Bogart plays his best in my view as does Ingrid Bergman. The script and performances sizzle as does the magnetism between the two. Special mention should go to a sterling, and under-rated performance by Claude Rains ...
