The Who's Musical Tribute To The Mods And Rockers Of The 1960's

Advantages: A stellar cast, headed by the brilliant Phil Daniels
Disadvantages: Ray Winstone is given far too limited screen time

Wow! Doesn't this classic musical drama still rock after over 30 years since it premiered. Written by Franc Rodder (who also directed this film), Dave Humphries and Martin Stellman, "Quadrophenia" (1979) was rock group The Who's explosive, enthralling musical tribute to the mods and rockers of the swinging sixties. "Quadrophenia" boasts a stellar cast list, headed by a riviting, powerful performance from the ever-great Phil Daniels. The rest of ...
...legendary ex-lead singer of The police, Sting, Mark Wingett (later famous for his role as DCI Jim Carver in ITV's police drama "The Bill"), Philip Davis (who's list of film and television credits are endless), Leslie Ash (long before her days as one of the leading stars in ITV's action-drama "C.A.T.S Eyes" and the classic BBC sitcom "Men Behaving Badly"), singer Toyah Wilcox, the ultimate screen hard-man Ray Winstone (though is disappointingly given ...

RAY WINSTONE IN ANOTHER STARK, POWERFUL DRAMA

Advantages: The supreb cast - especially Ray Winstone and kathy Burke
Disadvantages: None

Nil By Mouth (1997) immediately impresses just upon reading the cast list: the ever-excellent Ray Winstone in one of his finest, most intensifying roles, the wonderful Kathy Burke who yet again proves what a dynamic and versatile actor she is, Edna Dore, Laila Morse (now better known for her role as "old" Mo Slater in the BBC soap EastEnders), Charlie Creed-miles, Jamie Foreman, Chrissie Cotterill, Jon Morrison and Steve Sweeney. Fantastic, flawless ...
...petty crime. Never once does Nil By Mouth strike a false chord. Infact you will constantly be on the edge of your seat just by Ray Winstones intensely frightening performance as a hopelessly drug-addicted, alchoholic, wife beater. Due to the stark realism, you feel in each and every scene, as though you are standing right next to these characters, just literally looking on in horror - like watching documentary realism. This is not least due to the ...

A Last Hurrah for Quality Drama

Advantages: Slick and moody with excellent storylines
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little too moody for some

...*** Series Background Vincent Gallagher (Winstone) is an ex-cop now running a team of private investigators in Manchester. They tackle anything, from insurance swindlers to benefit cheats, but the series itself deals (naturally) with the team's meatier and more dramatic investigations. Vincent is aided and abetted by his two senior assistants, Beth (Suranne Jones) and John (Ian Puleston-Davies) as well as by the two 'office juniors', a sweet single-mum, ...
...devoting his time to investigations Vincent is struggling to come to terms with his ruined love life. As the series gets under way we quickly learn that his partner, Cathy (Eva Pope), has walked out on him and moved in with one of his former police colleagues, DCI David Driscoll (Philip Glenister). The tensions between the trio will dominate the first series as will the subtle and understated attraction between Vincent and Beth. Episode 1 The team ...

Don't Bother Breaking In

Advantages: Some solid perfomances.
Disadvantages: Stodgy writing, stolid direction and unlikeable characters.

A series of break-ins at his architecture firm’s new offices in King’s Cross bring Will into contact with fifteen year-old Miro. Will’s investigations lead to him getting involved with boy’s mother Amira, a Bosnian ex-pat who works as a tailor. Meanwhile his home life is no picnic; his wife is prone to depression and her daughter has a compulsive order that has so far defied diagnosis. “Breaking and Entering” is Anthony Minghella’s third collaboration ...
...yet. It wants to be an insightful and thought-provoking contemporary drama. But instead it turns out a stodgy and self-indulgent bout of upper middle class navel-gazing. It looks slick enough most of the time, with Minghella revelling in the contrast between Will’s glossy Kensington house and the insalubrious environs of his new offices. But there are times when shots swim out of focus. The parkour that opens the movie is decent enough; competently ...
